With a Bachelor's of Science in Birth-Kindergarten Education, students will be prepared to teach in, administer, and direct early learning environments from ages birth to five. The program integrates a core set of pedagogy courses, clinical experiences, and practical applications of child development and early learning.

Undergraduate Admissions

As a student in the Birth to Kindergarten program at GWU, you will learn about the development stages children experience from birth through age five. By studying the learning characteristics of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, you will acquire useful techniques and strategies to measure cognitive, social, emotional and communication development.  Students may choose a licensure or non-licensure track. The 128-credit-hour program will be offered on the Boiling Springs campus as well as in distance and online formats.

The licensure track prepares individuals to be recommended for a North Carolina Professional Educator Initial License. This licensure is required for individuals who want to teach in Pre-K, More at Four and Early Head start classrooms in NC Public Schools. Graduates of this track will be fully prepared to be effective educators of pre-Kindergarten students. Candidates must pass all licensure requirements, including the student teaching experience, prior to being recommended for licensure by the School of Education.

The non-licensure track prepares candidates to be highly effective in providing optimal quality childcare in non-public school settings. Candidates will exit the program with the skills necessary to improve childcare processes and practices in non-public school settings. Graduates will complete an administrative seminar as their capstone experience.
