Department of English Language and Literature

Goals

To enable students to:

  1. Develop intellectually;
  2.  Think, read, and write independently and critically; and
  3. Communicate effectively.

Outcomes

A student who chooses to major in either field of study offered by the department will develop the ability to:

  • Think critically;
  • Write maturely and speak effectively;
  • interpret and evaluate literature;
  • Utilize technological and informational skills to successfully communicate in an electronic age;
  •  Make career preparation based on a solid English language and literature background; and
  • Understand literature as an expression of different cultures.

 In addition to the above, students majoring in English with teacher licensure will:

  • Exhibit a command of the English language in both oral and written communication;
  •  Possess the skills to formulate objectives, select material, use appropriate teaching strategies, and evaluate learning; and
  • Demonstrate a commitment to lifelong, professional learning.
