The Department of Natural Sciences at Gardner-Webb University offers three majors: biology, chemistry, and environmental science. These degrees are housed in the brand-new science laboratory center.

Department of Natural Sciences

The biology major at Gardner-Webb will provide you with a broad-based program in both field and laboratory methods. Required courses in the major will expose you to plant and animal sciences, molecular biology, and ecology. Additional biology electives (e.g., microbiology, cell biology, medical terminology) allow you to tailor your experience to the needs of your professional track.

Biology (BIOL) Major Requirements

A major in Biology requires 30 semester hours above the core requirement in Biology courses numbered 200 and above, including a class in:

Animal Science

BIOL 201: Invertebrate Zoology (4 hrs.)

BIOL 202: Vertebrate Zoology (4 hrs.)

BIOL 315: General and Comparative Animal Physiology (4 hrs.)

Plant Science

BIOL 207: General Botany (4 hrs.)

BIOL 320: Plant Systematics (4 hrs.)

Molecular Science

BIOL 301: Genetics (4 hrs.)

BIOL 352: Cell Biology (4 hrs.)

BIOL 411: Immunology (4 hrs.)

BIOL 422: Biochemistry (4 hrs.)

BIOL 402: Ecology (4 hrs.)

Biology Electives (12 Hours)

Seminar (2 Hours)

Honor's Thesis is equivalent to 1 hour of seminar.
Students may use Honors 400 and/or Honors 401 for three hours of department approved Biology electives when the research and thesis topics are appropriate.

Additional Requirements

CHEM 111: General Chemistry I (4 hrs.)

CHEM 112: General Chemistry II (4 hrs.)

CHEM 201: Organic Chemistry I (4 hrs.)

CHEM 202: Organic Chemistry II (4 hrs.)
