Your Spanish major will help you develop advanced skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Through small, conversation-based classes, you’ll get plenty of opportunities to practice communication and build relationships with your classmates and professions. You’ll also explore the history, literature, culture, and even films of the Spanish-speaking world to gain meaningful context for the language. Majoring in Spanish will open up a world of enhanced travel, new employment opportunities, and a greater appreciation for diversity.
Our accomplished faculty have worked and studied extensively throughout the Spanish-speaking world. They bring a wealth of experience and knowledge into the classroom creating a rich learning environment for students like you. The small class sizes (usually fewer than twelve students) will provide you with the opportunity to build relationships with your professors. Every year Gardner-Webb hosts teaching assistants from Spanish-speaking countries to live and teach on campus, offering you the opportunity to practice your Spanish and learn different cultures, cuisine, and games while developing relationships with native speakers.
Every summer Gardner-Webb offers a study abroad experience in Alajuela, Costa Rica. You will spend four weeks living with a host family, attending Spanish language classes, and embracing the Costa Rican culture. You may also choose to study abroad in León, Spain for a semester.
In additional to local service opportunities, international mission trips are available through the Office of Christian Life and Service. These are wonderful opportunities to use your Spanish with native speakers while building relationships with Christian brothers and sisters around the globe.
This weekly gathering allows you a fun, informal setting to practice speaking and expand your understanding of Spanish culture and language. Tertulia is host by the Spanish Teaching Assistants to share cuisine from their home countries, play conversation games, watch movies, etc. You won’t want to miss it!
Sigma Delta Pi
The National Collegiate Hispanic Honors Society, Sigma Delta Pi, serves to recognize students for their high academic achievement in Spanish. Through activities and events for the community, the organization also works to increase appreciation of the Spanish-speaking world’s culture and contributions. Membership is open to students with a Spanish GPA of at least 3.0, and new members are inducted each spring.
Each year an outstanding Spanish student, as chosen by the Spanish professors, is awarded on the basis of academic achievement.
Your degree in Spanish and the language proficiency you will acquire will prepare you for exciting opportunities in many fields. A minor in business, social sciences, or education will expand your job options.
Gardner-Webb’s Spanish graduates are excelling in a variety of pursuits. One recent graduate is pursuing a master’s at Boston College. Another wrote a grant for the Cleveland County YMCA to help them reach Hispanics in the community. Several alumni are now high school Spanish teachers.
