NCANS Conference

On October 1, 2009, eleven Gardner-Webb School of Nursing students attended the North Carolina Association of Nursing Students (NCANS) conference held in Durham, North Carolina. These students were:

First Year-Jessica Duff, Abigail Jenkins, Megan Hughes, Meghan Lowrance, and Carole Reed

Second Year-Daniel Brewer, Sabrina Singleton, Ginny Yergler, and Mary Beth Hancock.

BSN-Bethany French and Melia Johnson.

At the NCANS conference students were able to attend sessions that focused on popular topics associated with the nursing profession including: nurse anesthesiology, political nursing, and substance abuse to name a few. Along with the available focus sessions, there were also NCLEX review classes offered. These classes taught students successful tips on how to take the national exam, the NCLEX, and provided a mini review for those who might have needed a refresher course on certain body systems.

During the NCANS conference, GWU students had the opportunity to sit in the House of Delegates and view parliamentarian procedure. Gardner-Webb had enough NCANS members to have two representatives in the House of Delegates. There, the two representatives were qualified to vote on any issues brought before the house.

Finally, GWU had three students run for office positions on the North Carolina Nurses Association Board. The Gardner-Webb School of Nursing is proud to announce that all three currently hold positions on the NCANS Board.

Meghan Lowrance (First Year)-District I Director

Daniel Brewer (Second Year)-District II Director

Both Meghan and Daniel are in charge of recruiting nursing students in their districts to become members of NCANS. They are also responsible for educating nursing schools about NCANS and how to create a Student Nurses Association within the schools.

Bethany French RN (BSN)-President

Bethany held a position as District I Director last year and is currently serving as the President of NCANS. This is a huge responsibility that not many would be able to achieve. Bethany was a favorite among the students who attended the conference. Her charming personality and previous experience not only on the NCANS board but also as Chapter President was very appealing to those who voted.

Gardner-Webb University has three wonderful students representing the GWU School of Nursing. It is our hopes as a school that we will continue to be able to represent Gardner-Webb on the NCANS Board.
