Master of Science in Nursing

The School of Nursing offers a flexible, 30 to 36 credit program leading to the Master of Science in Nursing degree. Students have the option of completing their degree at our main campus branch or completely online.

Nursing Administration

Nursing Education - The Nursing education program at Gardner-Webb University has been developed with the preparation of future nurse educators in mind. The goal of the program is to assist those seeking a master’s degree in nursing with an emphasis on health education. This goal can be attained in a classroom setting, educating patients, or as someone able to educate their fellow nursing colleagues.

MSN/MBA - Master of Science in Nursing Administration/Master of Business Administration. This degree plan offers both degrees by completing a total of 60-66 credit hours.

Pathways to MSN:

BSN to MSN

Registered Nurses must be accepted into the BSN Program. Students should notify their BSN advisor of their intent to enter the RN to MSN accelerated course of study. Upon approval by the BSN advisor, two courses in the MSN curriculum (NURS 502 Methods of Advanced Research and NURS 501 Nursing and Health Care Systems and Issues) will be substituted for two courses in the BSN curriculum (NURS 301 Research in Nursing and NURS 303 Trends in Health Care), respectively. Students will receive the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree upon completion of the BSN requirements with the substituted courses. Students may then apply to the MSN program to complete the remaining 30 hours of MSN course requirements.

RN to MSN

If a person has already completed the MBA degree and wants an MSN/MBA degree, he/she must complete the fifteen hours of the MSN core and the twelve hours of the nursing component, plus one elective.

If a person has an MSN degree in Nursing Administration and wants an MSN/MBA degree, he/she must complete thirty hours of the MBA core courses, in addition to the six hours of MBA courses already completed within the MSN program.

Criteria for Admission

Application for admission to the MSN Program should be made through the Graduate School.  Application for admission to the MSN/MBA Program should be made to the Graduate School and the to the Graduate School of Business.  In order to enroll students from a variety of backgrounds with the greatest potential for successfully completing the program, the following criteria for acceptance will be used:

  1. A Baccalaureate Degree in nursing from a regionally accredited institution with a nationally accredited program
  2. Current unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse
  3. GPA of 2.70 on all undergraduate work
  4. Satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT)
  5. Transcripts of all previous college studies- transcript request form
  6. Three letters of reference using our Reference Evaluation Forms
  7. Proof of satisfactory criminal background check
  8. Immunizations as required by the university
  9. Residence Verification Statement- form required 

Admission Requirements for the RN with a Baccalaureate of Science in another field include the above plus:

  1. Completion of a graduate or undergraduate general statistics course which includes probability theory, inferential statistics, and descriptive statistics.
  2. Completion of a nursing health assessment course
  3. For admission to the Master's in Nursing Administration: completion of a nursing leadership/management course

Post Master's Nursing Administration Certificate Program

Purpose

The purpose of Post Master's Nursing Administration Certificate Program is to provide the opportunity for registered nurses currently holding a master's degree in nursing to expand their professional role by gaining specialized knowledge in the area of nursing administration.  Students completing the Post Master's Nursing Administration Certificate Program are academically prepared to take a national certification examination for Nurse Executives. Students will receive academic credit for all courses taken in the certificate program.  A grade of B or better is required to receive course credit.  The certificate program requires 10 hours of course work as described below.

Post Master's Nursing Education Certificate Program

Purpose

The purpose of the nursing education certificate program is to facilitate the education of mater's prepared nurses for roles as nurse educators in an academic or clinical setting.  Students completing the Post Master's in Nursing Education Certificate Program are academically prepared to take a national certification examination for Nurse Educators. Students will receive academic credit for all courses taken in the certificate program.  A grade of B or better is required to receive course credit.  The certificate program requires 10 hours of course work as described below.

These courses are currently offered in the distance-learning format during the spring, summer, and fall semesters.  Selected courses are offered in the traditional face-to-face format on the main campus at Boiling springs, N.C.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements for the Post Master's in Nursing Administration and Nursing Education Certificate Programs include:

1.  Current, unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse.

2.  Official transcripts documenting completion of a master's degree in nursing from an accredited institution.

3.  Completed application to the Graduate School.
