Meet Jesse

Name: Jesse Roberts
Major:  Psychology
Hometown: Rutherfordton, NC

Interests:  Playing piano at my church, spending time with friends, Youth Group Activities, Student Admissions Association, Watching The Office every Tuesday night with my dorm buddies

My name is Jesse Roberts and I am a Freshman Psychology major here at Gardner-Webb! I graduated from R-S Central High (which is in a small town called Rutherfordton, NC) in June 2007. I am the Pianist at my church, Spencer Baptist, in Spindale, NC.
I have known since the 8th grade that I wanted to come to GWU. Gardner-Webb is only thirty minutes from my hometown, and many people ask why I chose to go to a school that was so close to home. If you ask me, college is what you make of it! You can make it as close or as far away as you like! I am the first grandchild from both sides of my family to attend a four year university. I set my goals high, and God made a way! Gardner-Webb has so much to offer! From the small class sizes to the Christian environment, GW is an amazing place to get a great education. I know this is where God wants me, and there is no better feeling in this world!

This week has been good. I have been really busy though! I have decided to take a position as Pianist at a new church! I am excited, but apprehensive at the same time. I love the people at my church, and don't particularly want to leave, but God has other plans. I will begin my duties as Pianist at Loray Baptist Church in May. I have done a lot of praying about the situation and God has definitely given me the answer I need! He is an amazing God and I know He wouldn't have opened this door had he not wanted me to take advantage of it! Please be in prayer for me as I make this major transition! Below I have posted a photo of the new church! Check it out.

So, this year - my FRESHMAN year of COLLEGE is nearly over! It really seems like just yesterday that I was moving into my dorm room, but now an entire school year has flown by and I am amazed at how fast it has done so! ! This summer is going to be a blast, and I can't wait to see what God has in store for next school year. :-)

So, this week has been hectic, but great! ! The beginning of the week was kind of dreary and rainy, but yesterday and today have been amazing! The weather has been great! Sunny days, great temperatures! I was one of the many people on the Quad yesterday. . . but i was studying for a test! Ugh. But, hey, atleast I was outside rather than stuck in a dorm room! :-) Last night, a big group of friends and I got together and had a really great time. We all got together in my dorm's lobby and watched the show the Office. For those of you who don't know, the writers of this show have been on strike for the past few months.
Well, last night was the end of the strike. . .they aired a NEW episode! So, of course we all got together to watch it. When the show went off we all hung out, had some snacks and played a couple of games of Apples to Apples. It was great. Now, I'm looking forward to the summer! :-)

Hey everybody! Sorry it’s been so long since I last posted a blog. I hope everyone is getting all of their scholarship applications and college applications filled out! I definitely know how deadlines are! ! The past few weeks have been insane! We had Spring Break a couple of weeks ago, then we came back for a week and a half, and then we were out for Easter Break. The breaks were nice, but it seems like all of my professors like to load us down with tons of assignments before and after break. I literally have sixteen pages worth of papers due by this Wednesday. It’s CRAZY! But, I guess that’s just one of the joys of college!  Haha Gotta love it!

So, this Friday night, I went out with a group of friends. First, we were headed to this burger place that our friend was trying to get us to go to. Once we got there, I was kind of glad to see that it was closed. It was one of the sketchiest places I have ever been! So, since this place was closed, we all ended up at Outback in Gaffney (20 minutes away). After we had dinner, we did some shopping at the outlet mall and headed back to campus. We were kind of bored, so we went to the gazebo at Lake Hollifield (our on campus lake) to hang out. We had a blast. Here are some pictures from that night.

This week has been good, but this weekend was amazing! My youth group goes on an annual winter retreat to Boone. Some ski, others just hang at the massive 3 story cabin that we rent every year. There were 38 of us on the trip this year. We left for the retreat on Friday. There was a group that left for Boone at 1 o'clock, and I went in the other group that left at 5 o'clock. Since I was in the later group, rather than going to the cabin first, we went straight to the restaurant where our group was going to eat, the Daniel Boone Inn. If you are ever in Boone, and you have never eaten there, you definitely need to go out of your way to eat there at least once. It is awesome! After eating, we all went back to the cabin and relaxed. On Saturday morning, a group left at 8 am to go skiing. I had a lot of homework to do, so I didn't go skiing. Later that day, the group that chose not to ski went to Chick Fil A for lunch, and later did some shopping at a nearby outlet mall and the mast general store. Then we went back to the cabin. By the time I sat down and finished up my loads homework, it was time for us to order the pizzas for dinner. We ate, and then went downstairs for a devotion. After devotions, some of my friends and I went up stairs and played some games and enjoyed the time away from school. Sunday morning, we got up, loaded the vehicles, had a devotion, and went to lunch at Wendy's before heading home! This weekend was absolutely wonderful! It was great to get away from the stresses of school for a while. One more week til Spring Break! ! I can't wait! ! !

So, today has been really good! Ronda, a very close friend of mine, spoke at a local church this morning for their WMU Recognition Service.
She has a very powerful testimony that has touched many lives. She asked me to go with her, and play before she spoke, so I did. Her testimony was such a blessing, as always. But, this time was a little different than other times that I have heard her speak. This time, rather than talking about all that she had experienced, and how God had allowed her to succeed, she talked very little about her past, but focused more on the blessings that have come from those negative experiences. It was wonderful to know that she has kept her faith in God this entire time rather than focusing on the negative and dwelling on the horrific obstacles that she has encountered. Below is a picture of Ronda, her husband (Greg), and I. They are wonderful people, and I am blessed beyond measure to have them as a part of my life.

This past weekend was absolutely awesome! My birthday was on Saturday, so three of my friends, my aunt, and myself all went to Spartanburg (which is like an hour away) and had dinner at O'Charley's. After dinner we went to the movies. The entire time we were together, we were hysterical. I have never laughed so hard in my life! It was great, because I was with three of my closest friends, and the coolest aunt ever.
On Saturday my family and I had dinner at what is now my favorite restaraunt of all time. . . The Woodshed. It sounds kinda country, but it is the most amazing steakhouse ever! Believe it or not, I am pretty sure it even surpasses Outback. It is in a small town called Stanley, NC. We were first told the wait would be 35 minutes, but one hour and fifteen minutes later, we realized that that was not true. After we were finally seated, the ridiculously long wait no longer mattered. The food was well worth the time we spent sitting there. So, if you are ever in Stanley, NC, check out the Wood Shed, even if there is a long wait, it's worth it. . . trust me!
Below is a pic of me with my little birthday cake. :)

This week has been insane! I played for my first wedding on Saturday! It was quite an experience. The rehearsal was on Friday night, and the wedding was Saturday. I am so glad its over now. The practice time that I put into it was pretty crazy. Since it was my first wedding, I wanted to make sure everything was right, so needless to say, I have had no free time lately. With work, classes, church, and the wedding, my social life has been quite minimal.

It seems like all of my professors have gotten together and decided to give me major assignments all at one time. Between a two page comparitive analysis essay for Old Testament, a ton of labs and online postings for Dimensions of Personal Health, a Developmental Psych project, and a Proposal Essay for my Composition class, my life has revolved around late night studying, work and the wedding that is now over. Now its time to start working on Easter Cantata music for church! Its a never ending story, but, ya gotta love college life! Can't get any better than this!

January 20, 2008

Well, the second semester is finally here! Break was really good, but now it's time to get back into the swing of things! Back to work, and classes, and paper writing, and essays, and homework, and all that good stuff. I'm especially looking forward tohanging out with my friends and going to the Verge, which is our on campus worship service that is held in Dover Theater every Tuesday night.

So, Boiling Springs got a HUGE surprise on Wednesday night of this past week. So, it's about 9:30 p.m. and I get back to my dorm after going to church, and I'm checking some email and getting ready for bed, and I hear "HOLY CRAP! IT's SNOWING!" from one of my friends down the hall. I jumped up out of the recliner and ran down the hall to the door, and they weren't joking! Small flakes of snow were floating to the ground! By midnight the snow was heavier and it was sticking to everything! About 12:30 AM the entire campus came to life. Everyone (including my friends and I) was on the Quad having snowball fights and building snow men. It was great! We were all like little kids again, with no parents here to tell us to "get inside or we would catch a cold." We were outside until about 2:30 AM just enjoying the unexpected weather. It was evident that classes would be cancelled the next day, so we were not about to let the fun end. After coming inside and warming up, some of my friends and I got together in my room and watched a movie. It was a great night. Hopefully that was not the last snow Gardner-Webb will see this Winter season. Below are some pictures of GWU on Thursday morning after the snow. =)

December 17, 2007

Wow. The holidays are finally here! ! ! I don't know about you guys, but the warm weather we had for a while really threw me off! It was really hard for me to listen to Christmas music while going down the road with my air conditioner on! I mean come on. . .75 degree weather in December?!?! Ha ha I believe one of my good friends said it best, "I think this warm weather is God's gift to us for the week of exams. When it's cold and gloomy everyone is in a bad mood, but this weather made exam week a little easier." What a perspective! :-)

The holidays have always been a special time for me. A time to spend with friends and family. A time to slow down and look at the things that really matter the most, rather than focusing on the hustle and bustle of our fast-paced everyday lives. But, the holidays have been particularly difficult for me for the past two years becuase I have lost both of my biological parents. Athough they are not here for the holidays, it really thrills me to think that they are spending Christmas together in Heaven for the third year this year. I miss them with all of my heart, but I know without a shadow of a doubt that they are better off. My adopted parents, however, seem to make things a little easier. They have made me a part of their family and I am extremely fortunate to spend my third Christmas with them this year.

They are amazing people, and I am eternally grateful that God has placed them in my life.

No matter how busy you get wrapping gifts, shopping, or writing Christmas cards, don't forget the true meaning of Christmas, because it was on that day that love came down and hope was born. . .in the form of a baby. . .Jesus Christ our Savior.

Merry Christmas

Christmas is just around the corner! ! ! Which means we get a three and a half week break! I get so excited around this time of year! The Festival of Lights concert the other night really got me in the Christmas spirit. It was awesome. First we went into Dover theater

for a big Christmas concert that consisted of solo instrumentals, performances from the concert choir and chorale. After the concert, the

entire student body gathered on the Quad around the campus Christmas Tree for the lighting ceremony. After the tree was lit, we all went to

O Max Gardner Hall for a reception. It was great! What better way to kick off the greatest season of the year! ! !

Merry Christmas! ! !

November 26, 2007

Thanksgiving is an awesome time of year.  Not only do we eat a lot of great food and get a break from school, but it's also a really good time to step back and realize what you are thankful for.

My adopted family and I went to my "Grandma's" house on Thanksgiving Day.  That woman was born to cook! haha.  She always insists on cooking for the entire family rather than having everyone bring something.

While we were there, all I could think about was how grateful I was to have them all in my life.  Both of my parents passed away before I was seventeen, and now, I am part of a whole family.  I was surrounded by people who love and care about me.  My biological family is not a lot to brag about.  My new family are people who aren't really obligated to care but do anyway, and that absolutely made my Thanksgiving the best yet.

November 13, 2007

Wow! What a semester! I absolutely cannot believe my first semester of college is nearly over! ! ! In less that one month, I will be

one-eighth of the way finished with my undergraduate degree! ! ! So much has happened in three months! It really seems like yesterday I was

unloading boxes full of my stuff into my dorm room. In thirteen weeks I have met so many new people, and made so many life-long friends. It’s amazing at how life can change in such a short amount of time. College life is amazing, and time is flying! Can’t wait to see what’s coming next! Life is great!

November 3, 2007

In my Senior year of high school, I was terrified of the thought of college. It was intimidating to think that in less than one year I

would be taken completely out of my comfort zone and put in a place away from everything I had always known. To all of you who are

experiencing the same fear, take it from someone who has been there. . .it will be ok! ! !

Once you move in to your residence hall, your college experience truly begins. The orientation activities that you will take part in

will also provide TONS of opprotunities for you to meet new people. Everyone at Orientation (with the exception of "big brothers and

sisters" and peer leaders) is new to the college experience too, so you are not alone in your fear. Pretty much everyone else who is there is

going through the exact same thing you are. I met what is now one of my best friends at the Tailgate Party we had one night at Orientation!

Don't be afraid to break out of your comfort zone, put yourself out there and meet new people!

My theory is: "College is what you make of it." You can choose to go home every weekend, or you can choose to stay on campus and find ways to get involved. There is always something going on on the weekends, so if you are bored, it is your own fault! Our Student

Activities Staff does a great job of keeping the student body entertained! From concerts on the Quad to Midnight Munchies there is

always something going on!

College life is absolutely amazing! At Gardner-Webb you will get what you want out of college as long as you look for it! The spiritual

atmosphere here is amazing, although it is not forced on anyone. The academics are challenging, but they truly prepare you for your future!

I am glad I am choosing to spend four years of my life at Gardner-Webb. I can't imagine spending them anywhere else!
