Well the countdown has begun. There are exactly 23 more days of classes, 30 more days until Summer Break, and for myself 34 days until my mission team heads to South Africa! It's a pretty exciting time!  There are so many amazing things on the horizon, I just have to make it through the papers and readings and classes so I can enjoy it. But it's happening slowly but surely.

Like I said I will give an update on the Campus Ministries Retreat this past weekend... IT WAS AWESOME!! 14 Students headed out for Mt. Airy, NC to meet with students from across the state and enjoy a time of planning and worship. It was a great break, great planning time, and overall really exciting. I know that God is going to do some amazing things on this campus and its great to be a part of it.

Below are some fun pictures from our little side trip to Mayberry, NC (Home of Andy Griffith), as you can imagine, it was quite a fun little excursion!

April 4, 2008

Well this has been quite an interesting week. Not only has the weather bounced between hot and cold but it seems like teachers are turning up their heat. Lots of papers and lots of projects pretty much highlight my life for the past few days. Not to mention birthday parties for my roommate (Tyler) and friend (April).

But the exciting thing is that it's FRIDAY! This weekend I get to go to the NC Baptist Campus Ministries Spring Retreat with a bunch of other students. We will get to meet people from Campus Ministries across the state and just spend some time thinking about how our Campus Ministries could get better.  It's exciting to plan, especially when we have just finalized our CMU Leadership Council for next year. I will have to fill you all in on Monday! Have an amazing Weekend!!!

Wow this weekend was alot of fun. First off we had Dawg Days, which most of you reading have probably come to before. They are our prospective student visitation days and they are always exciting.
Other than the rain the event was great. I got to meet some awesome people and, the most exciting thing, I got to be MAC THE BULLDOG. It was alot of fun to go around and torture you high school seniors into taking pics with me. Certainly an day.

That evening was even better. Myself and several others went to StarMax in Gaffney, SC to do some bowling which was great. It was cosmic bowling and the best of that event, I WON with a score of 118!  After that everyone wasn't ready to head back so we went to Spartanburg, SC and got some Krispy Kreme... needless to say this was an amazing weekend!!

Well it's that time of the semester. The time when exams and papers are at their peaks, students are ready for vacation, and the weather outside is beautiful.... well kinda. It's been a pretty awesome week here at GWU. The weather, though rainy, has been pretty comfortable.  So comfortable I've spent a couple afternoons hanging out on the quad, of course studying for mid-terms.

Luckily it is only three more days until Spring Break begins and I don't think there isn't anyone, staff or student, that isn't ready for this 9-day vacation. Of course I am having to make it through my 3 mid- term exams and 1 oral exam before I get to be really excited, but it's all worth it.

It's crazy to think that another semester is halfway through and before you know it, it will be orientation time again. My roommate turned to me the other day and said "Do you realize we graduated from high school 2 years ago?" and I replied "Do you realize that we graduate college in 2 years?" ... SO CRAZY. Anyways, I hope that everyone reading this has an amazing rest of the week and don't get too flustered with school... Spring Breaks are on the horizon!!

February 18, 2008

he past few weeks have been crazy. With classes in full swing and so many other events going on it has been hard to take time to enjoy myself. Luckily myself, my friend April, and roommate Tyler, got to take the opportunity to step away from campus life and go hiking at South Mountain. It was an amazing day, the weather was perfect and the timing was great. We stopped along the way to enjoy some beautiful waterfalls and just take time to really relax. It was great!

Though it wasn't long before we were back on campus and back in the swing of homework, papers, meetings, meals, games and so on. This weekend several of my friends and I went to the Men's Basketball Game against Campbell where I'm proud to say that we beat them GWU 86 / Campbell 70. It was awesome to see so many people at the game, I think GWU outnumbered Campbell 10 to 1. It was a great game and fun time to get to hangout with friends outside of the classroom.

This week will certainly be a busy one but with Spring Break only a few weeks there's alot that will be going on. Be sure to check back for an update!

Wow it's been a crazy week and it's only WEDNESDAY! Why you may ask?
Well This is an exciting week for our campus because it is Celebration Week, which is a week of amazing worship and rejuvenation on our campus. Beginning at Dimensions on Tuesday Morning we have several worship and prayer services around campus. We have worship every night (Tues, Wed, Thurs) and two dimensions sessions (Tues & Thurs mornings). It's been amazing to see God on our campus. It's also exciting because for the first time in a while we have had students praying for the campus 24/7 from this past Sunday to this coming Sunday, anyone who has felt led can sign up for any time and we have an amazing prayer room for them to go to. It's a very exciting time for our campus and our student body.

It's also been an exciting week because we have University Fellows interviews this coming Friday and have already had interviews last Thursday and Friday. It's so awesome to get to meet and talk to incoming freshman and see where they are in their college search. I may be a sophomore but I definitely remember the stress and struggle involved in making your college selection, which I think is why I enjoy meeting prospective students.

That's probably enough for now but hopefully I can have some pictures from Celebration Week for you all next blog. I hope you all have an amazing week and know that even though I may not know who all is reading this, you are in my prayers as you go about this college search.

Peace!

So I'm starting to see more and more how as college students we revert back to our childhood. For instance, two days ago the campus became aware of the possibility of snow, and a decent amount of snow at that.

Well let me tell you, I've never seen soo many people as giddy as they were when they found out about it, and I've never seen as many people running around outside when it actually started snowing. Of course the best part... CLASSES were CANCELLED. The famous word that ANY student wants to hear.

snow

The most amazing part of it all was at 1:30 AM when it was really coming down, there were TONS of people outside having a huge snowball fight, it was amazing! Like easily 150 students just out on the quad going crazy. And knowing that we had no classes the next day made it even better. Everyone stayed out later and we were able to put studies on hold for just one more day.

Needless to say I slept in until about 11 AM but our "Snow Day" was about as great as the actual snow. No one wanted to go out into the cold so everybody gathered together and had pretty much a huge "Game Day", I don't think I walked past one room that didn't have a game layed out in the floor. It was awesome.

Sorry for the randomness of the blog! But just thought you all would like to hear about our fun little Snow Day!

Wow, Christmas time is always my favorite time at G-dubb. Everyone is cheerful and just in the Christmas spirit. I have to say that Tyler (my roommate) and myself have gotten into the Holiday Spirit too. We now have a 2 foot Christmas Tree and 300 Christmas lights strung about our room. The best part was the Holiday Christmas party we had just the other day and the Christmas Verge we had Tuesday night.

The Verge is our Student led campus worship and it's always an amazing experience, but there is just something about the spirit of the room when it comes to the famous Christmas Verge. Neal Payne (Campus Minister) brought an amazing message about Christ and how he turns the other cheek to us every time we smack him in the face with our sin. It was a really powerful and moving time.

Shortly following we invited quite a few people to our room for refreshments and a time of fellowship and celebration of the Christmas season. We had tons of snacks and just had a couple hours of people stopping by to say hello and take a break from Exam studying. On top of that we even did a raffle for several different things, even a $10 Sonic Giftcard. It too was just an awesome time to sit back and enjoy our amazing friends at GWU.

I hope that as school/work/life is winding down for you guys over the next few weeks that you too get the opportunity to experience the awesomeness of family and friends!

God Bless  - Joseph

Wow! Life has just errupted over this past week. If you haven't seen it in the newspaper or heard it on ESPN GWU beat the Kentucky Bobcats last Thursday. Now this seems like not a big deal...another win to add to the records. Well for those of you who are college basketball lovers truly understand the significance of this win. You see Kentucky is THE most winning team in college basketball, with well over 3,000 wins on record, and a team ranked in the Top 25 of all college basketball teams. This win is HUGE and man did we celebrate it.

It's been awesome to see the excitement and random bursts of support errupt around campus. From the impromptu pep rally in the LYCC with ESPN to the Campout for Tickets to the upcoming tournament games at Madison Square Garden, it's been amazing to see so many people come out to show that GWU love.

Ontop of the Kentucky win, the Bulldogs dominated North Greenville last night with a final score of GWU 99  -  Greenville 74. Just another thing to "get these dawgs fired up" before playing U Conn tomorrow in Madison Square Garden.

Wow! I don't even know where to begin. This past week has been a whirlwind of trips, classes, and festivities. I suppose I should start by introducing myself. If you couldn't tell from my bio, my name is Joseph Hamby. I am from Winston-Salem, NC and am a Sophomore here at G- dubb. I am a Public Relations major with a double minor in Religious Studies and YMCA Professional Studies. I am on the Campus Ministries Lead Council as their Concert & Events Coordinator, GWU Student YMCA Executive Council as the Program Development Coordinator, REACH Leadership Committee as Committee Chair, and Fellowship of Christians United in Service (FOCUS) as a Team Leader. Now that's enough about me!

October 29

Two weekends ago (Oct 19-23) I had the amazing opportunity to go on a mission trip with Campus Ministries to New Orleans, Louisiana for Fall Break. Our team of 25 left at 4 AM on Friday and headed out for our 12 hour drive to the Gulf. Though I've been to New Orleans twice since Hurricane Katrina, it has never ceased to amaze me how much still needs to be done. Our team spent three days working at two different worksites doing several different construction projects (dry wall, installing insulation, etc.) Each day after returning from our worksite we got to shower and rest before heading out to the French Quarter for a little fun and relaxation. Although it was only a five day mission trip it was one that I will never forget.

The only downside to it all was returning back to school, and I mean there is alot of sleep loss and no school work on mission trips. So needless to say I felt a couple days behind when we got back at 9 PM on Tuesday.

I still managed to get up for that good ole' 9 AM Religion and Culture class with Dr. Stepp. The short week went by fast and before you knew it, it was Friday and that means HOMECOMING... but you'll have to wait for my next update to hear about that!

Have a good one!
