Joyce Compton Brown taught for almost 40 years in the Department of English at Gardner-Webb University, where her specialties included Southern women writers and Appalachian culture. In the 1990s, Joyce founded a lecture series as part of the Life of the Scholar (L.O.T.S.) program led by her husband and fellow Gardner-Webb professor, Les Brown. Upon her retirement in 2006, Joyce was named Professor Emerita of English. Her family, friends, and colleagues established a fund to provide continued support for the lecture series she nurtured for many years, which was then formally named the Joyce Compton Brown Lecture Series.
