The GWU Choice Scholarships are named after these distinguished founding fathers.

O. Max Gardner, Governor of North Carolina 1929 - 1933

o. max gardner, governor of north carolina 1929-1933O. Max Gardner was born in Shelby, North Carolina. He was a lawyer and wealthy investor, who became North Carolina's Lieutenant Governor (Democrat, 1916 - 1921) and then Governor (1929 - 1933). In 1942, Governor O. Max Gardner began devoting his energy, time and wealth to strengthening and guiding the College. So important was his influence that the name of the institution was changed to Gardner-Webb College in honor of the governor, his wife Fay Webb Gardner, and their families.

Philip Lovin Elliott, President 1943 - 1961

Phillip Lovin ElliotA native of the North Carolina Mountains, Philip Lovin Elliott was an ordained minister, a college professor, and a born leader. In 1943, Elliott took on the challenge of the presidency at Gardner-Webb. Under Elliott's leadership, several new campus facilities were built including housing for faculty members. Equally important for the institutions development was the Baptist State Conventions acceptance of the school into the Baptist family of colleges in 1948, and the accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and School. Especially noteworthy was his concept of community education, a goal that anticipated the task undertaken a few years later by the community college movement.

John Cantrell, President 1939 - 1943

John CantrellA native of Cherokee County, South Carolina, was a man of deep faith, resolve, and conviction. During his tenure as the President of the College, Mr. Cantrell improved the appearance of the campus by building walkways around campus and by building a lily pond near the Huggins-Curtis building. The area around the spring was developed and a bridge and a 40 foot cement table were constructed. The rock wall was built to serve as the front entrance to the campus and the old gymnasium was stone veneered with local rocks brought by the community. Cantrell did his own fund-raising by collecting large and very small donations wherever he went. This laid the groundwork for future fund- raising drives of other administrations.
