Athletic Training

Responsibility of Each Member of the Emergency Plan

Athletic Training Student at the Site:

1. Primary survey.
2. Activate emergency action plan.
3. Assist certified athletic trainer with first aid until emergency medical services arrives.
4. Calm and reassure the student-athlete.
5. Travel with student-athlete to hospital or other facility.
6. Follow rest of emergency action plan.

Head Certified Athletic Trainer/Supervising Certified Athletic Trainer:

If on site:
1. Primary survey.
2. Activate emergency action plan.
3. Render first aid until a certified athletic trainer and/or emergency medical services arrives.
4. Calm and reassure the student-athlete.
5. Travel with student-athlete to hospital or other facility.
6. Follow rest of emergency action plan.

If not on site:
1. After activation, arrive on scene immediately.
2. Act, calm, cool, collective.
3. Assess situation.
4. Conduct Primary Survey
5. Provide appropriate emergency care until emergency medical services arrive.
6. Supply emergency medical services with emergency medical history and insurance information.
7. Supply emergency medical services with proper emergency information.
8. Inform parents of situation.
9. Fill out proper paper work.

Traffic Controller:
1. Keep other student-athletes away from site.
2. Keep spectators away from site.

Athletic Training Room Phone Person:
1. Call 911.
2. Inform 911 operator:
    A- location
    B- phone number (LYCC: 704-406-4356/GWU Football Center: 704-406-3583)
    C- student-athlete's chief complaint
    D- student-athlete's age
    E- student-athlete's level of consciousness
    F- student-athlete is breathing or having difficulty breathing
    G- remain on phone until 911 operator hangs up.
3. Inform Certified Athletic Trainer of the situation.
4. Call Campus Police (4444) and inform them of the situation.

Emergency Flag Person:
1. Arrive at location to flag down emergency medical services.
2. Have keys to unlock and open gates or doors.
3. Direct emergency medical services to injury site.

Coach:
1. If no athletic training staff are at the scene.
    A. Stabilize the student-athlete.
    B. Send an athlete to summon a Certified Athletic Trainer and/or activate emergency medical services (call 911).
    C. If the Certified Athletic Trainer is not available:
        1. Provide first-aid based on level of education/certification.
        2. Aid emergency medical services in any way possible.
        (Please notify campus police as deemed appropriate)
        3. Immediately notify Certified Athletic Trainer of the situation.

Gardner-Webb University Campus Police:
1. Assist athletic trainers in any way possible.
2. Unlock and open any doors and gates.
3. Assist emergency medical services with location of injury site.
4. Go-between on radio for status of emergency medical services.

Emergency Plan
I. Primary Survey (on site certified athletic trainer and/or Coach)
    A. Check Airway, Breathing, Circulation.

II. Secondary Survey
    A. Quick assessment and evaluation.
    B. Activate emergency action plan.
        1. Call athletic training room.
        2. Explain situation and give location of injury site.
        3. Stabilize the athlete until a Certified Athletic Trainer arrives.
        (If the certified athletic trainer is on the site he/she will be responsible for the activation and their part of the emergency plan)
    C. Activate emergency medical services; call 911.
        1. Inform 911 operator:
            A- location
            B- phone number (LYCC: 704-406-4356/GWU Football Center: 704-406-3583)
            C- student-athlete's chief complaint
            D- student-athlete's age
            E- student-athlete's level of consciousness
            F- student-athlete is breathing or having difficulty breathing
            G- remain on phone until 911 operator hangs up.
        2. Inform Certified Athletic Trainer of situation.
        3. Call and inform Campus Police of the situation (4444).
    D. Certified Athletic Trainer arrives on the scene.
        1. Arrive on scene immediately.
        2. Act, calm, cool, collective.
        3. Assess the situation.
        4. Provide proper first aid and/or medical care to injured student-athlete.
        5. Supply emergency medical services with emergency information.
        6. Afterwards inform parents of situation.
        7. Afterwards fill out paper work.
    E. Traffic/Crowd Controller
        1. Control traffic and keep back spectators.
        2. Keep other student-athletes back.
        3. If Campus Police are on the scene they will be responsible for traffic/crowd control.
    F. Gate Keeper
        1. Unlock all gates.
        2. Flag down emergency medical services and point in the right direction to the injury site.
        3. If Campus Police are on the scene they will be responsible for unlocking gates and assisting with emergency medical services with a prompt arrival.
