Kevin Jones
Kevin Jones, MA LAT ATC

Director of Athletic Training

Mr. Jones supervises and coordinates the University's medical care for 22 NCAA Division I/IAA athletic teams with his primary sport responsibility being Football.  In addition to his Athletic Trainer duties, Mr. Jones serves as Assistant Professor for the Athletic Training major in the Department of Physical Education, Wellness and Sport Studies where he teaches one three hour class within the Athletic Training major. It is Mr. Jones's responsibility to see that there is coordination between the educational program and the service program.  Jones earned a Bachelor of Arts from Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) College, and a Master of Arts from Gardner-Webb University. Jones and his wife, Shelly, have two children, Taylor and Ryan.

Jon T. Mitchell
Jon T. Mitchell, MA LAT ATC

Service Program Director

Mr. Mitchell's primary responsibilities are Men's Basketball and Men's Track and Field. In addition, Mr. Mitchell serves as an Approved Clinical Instructor and teaches one three hour class within the Athletic Training major. Mr. Mitchell is directly responsible for overseeing athletic insurance and coordinating inventory and purchasing for the athletic training program.  Mr. Mitchell most recently served as Head Athletic Trainer at Newberry College in Newberry, SC from 1998-2000.  Mr. Mitchell earned his Bachelor of Science from Mars Hill College and his Master of Arts from Gardner-Webb University. Mr. Mitchell is married to Stephanie Mitchell, ATC who serves as Head Athletic Trainer at Kings Mountain High School as well as an ACI with GWU's Athletic Training Educational Program.

Heather Hartsell
Heather L. Hartsell, MS LAT ATC

Educational Program Director

Ms. Hartsell is the Program Director for the Athletic Training Educational Program (ATEP).  As a full-time faculty member, Hartsell teaches classes within the Athletic Training Major and serves as Academic Advisor to Athletic Training majors.   Ms. Hartsell joined Gardner-Webb in the Fall of 2009 after having most recently served at Barton College.  While at Barton College, she served as the Interim Program Director/ Clinical Coordinator, an assistant professor, an approved clinical instructor in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies, and an assistant athletic trainer in the Department of Athletics.  In addition, Ms. Hartsell also participated in teaching first year students and was an active member on several academic committees.  In 2002, Ms. Hartsell completed her Master of Science degree in Sports and Exercise Sciences at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. While at West Texas A&M, she was the certified athletic trainer for the men's and women's soccer teams and a teaching assistant. In 2000, she received her Bachelor of Science degree from Mars Hill College located in Mars Hill, North Carolina.

Kat Ayotte
Kat Ayotte, MA LAT ATC

Assistant Athletic Trainer

Ms. Ayotte's  primary responsibilities are  coverage of baseball and golf as well as serving as an Approved Clinical Instructor.  In addition, Ms. Ayotte  will teach one three hour class within the Athletic Training Major.  Ms. Ayotte  joined Gardner-Webb's Athletic Training Staff in July, 2003 after serving Newberry College  as Head  Athletic Trainer.  Ms. Ayotte  earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts from Gardner-Webb University.

Assistant Athletic Trainer

Ms. Denny's primary responsibilities are Swimming and assisting with Football as well as serving as an Approved Clinical Instructor.  Ms. Denny rejoined the Athletic Training staff in July, 2008 after having previously served as Graduate Assistant.  Ms. Denny earned her Bachelor of Science from Mars Hill College and her Master of Arts from Gardner-Webb University.

Stephenie Stark
Stephenie Stark, LAT ATC

Assistant Athletic Trainer

Ms. Stark's primary responsibilities are Women's Basketball and Women's Cross Country and Track and Field as well as serving as an Approved Clinical Instructor.  Ms. Stark joined the Athletic Training staff in July, 2009 after having previously served as Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at East Stroudsburg University. Ms. Stark earned her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Western Carolina University in 2008 and is currently completing her Masters of Science from East Stroudsburg University.

William Harvard

Assistant Athletic Trainer

Mr. Harvard's primary responsibilities are coverage of Men's Soccer and Wrestling as well as serving as an Approved Clinical Instructor.  In addition, Mr. Harvard will teach one three hour class within the Athletic Training Major.  Mr. Harvard  joined Gardner-Webb's Athletic Training Staff in June, 2007 after serving Pfeiffer College as Assistant Athletic Trainer.  Mr. Harvard earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from The University of Georgia and his Master of Arts degree from Southeast Missouri State University.

Matthea Hungerford

Ms. Hungerford's primary responsibilities are coverage of Women's Soccer and Tennis, as well as serving as an Approved Clinical Instructor.  In addition, Ms. Hungerford will teach one three hour class within the Athletic Training Major.  Ms. Hungerford joined Gardner-Webb's Athletic Training Staff in July, 2007 after serving Bryan College as Athletic Training Clinical Coordinator and Assistant Athletic Trainer.  Ms. Hungerford earned her Bachelor of Science from Gardner-Webb University and her Master of Science from Indiana State University.
