The Lindsay family is not an ordinary family of five. Parents, Paul and Susan, have been practicing their music since early childhood, and they have raised their three children, Tyler, Ryan, and Christina, to do the same. The Gardner-Webb University Fine Arts Department is proud to present a unique family affair in performance to the University family and surrounding community.
Paul, Susan, and Tyler have been performing as a family since 2001 when they began playing weekly at the International Baptist Church in Honolulu, Hawaii. Ryan joined them in 2002 at the age of five, and Christina completed the ensemble when she was four in 2004. The Lindsay family performs as a brass quintet, jazz trio, quartet, and quintet, and their music is widely varied to appeal to audiences of all ages and musical tastes.
Tyler, age ten, began playing trumpet, viola, and piano at the age of three. Since then, he has begun playing several other instruments and has been featured alongside famous jazz musicians, including Wynton Marsalis. Nine-year old Ryan began playing the trombone, piano, and viola at age five. Ryan has an extraordinary ear and superb memory skills. Christina, a six-year old first grader, has been playing the trombone since she was four and a half. Although the trombone is cumbersome, Christina is able to wield the large instrument. Father, Paul, began his musical studies on the violin at age four and the trumpet at age six. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University and his Master’s degree from Juilliard and has since performed in venues including the United States Navy Band in Washington, DC and was the principal trumpet with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Venezuela. His wife, Susan, began her musical studies on the piano at age 6 and the french horn at age 9. She received her Bachelor’s degree in french horn performance with a minor in psychology from Carnegie-Mellon University and her Master’s degree in french horn performance from the Peabody Conservatory. She has toured with the New York Harlem Opera and performed with many orchestras including the Baltimore and Honolulu Symphonies.
The Lindsay Family will be showcased at Gardner-Webb University on Thursday, September 14, 2006 at 8:00 p.m. in Hamrick Hall’s Blanton Auditorium. The concert is open to the public, and the public is urged to arrive early to secure seating.
