The Gardner-Webb University School of Nursing and Office of Alumni Relations come together to host a 40th anniversary celebration for the School of Nursing on Saturday, March 4th in Ritch Banquet Hall, in the Dover Campus Center at Gardner-Webb University. The event begins with a reception at 6:00 pm in the Fireside Lounge, which is also in the Dover Campus Center. Dinner and a special program will follow the reception at 6:45 pm in Ritch Banquet Hall.
The reception will give School of Nursing alumni, faculty and staff a chance to reunite and reminisce about the past with former classmates and colleagues. The dinner program will begin with greetings from Gardner-Webb administration and the School of Nursing Dean, Dr. Shirley Toney. The program will feature a guest speaker who is a School of Nursing alumnus that has obtained a prominent administrative position in the medical field.
“This is a celebration of providing education for nurses who will go on to serve the community,” stated Dr. Shirley Toney. “The School of Nursing’s motto is caring for the body, mind and spirit and they strive to instill this into their students.” All alumni and graduating students of the School of Nursing are invited to this anniversary celebration. The cost to attend this event is $12 per person and all participants are asked to RSVP with payment, Anna Hamrick at 704-406-3885.
The Gardner-Webb School of Nursing was first established in 1965 by Mrs. Grace Lee, Dr. Shirley Toney, and Mrs. Glennie Beam as an associate degree program. The program started as a joint endeavor between two local hospitals and Gardner-Webb under the leadership of Dr. E. Eugene Poston. Over the past forty years the School of Nursing has gone on to add Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing programs to their curriculum. The school also offers classes at several satellite campuses throughout the piedmont of North Carolina.
Today both the Associate Degree in Nursing and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs are fully accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Through these programs, Gardner-Webb’s School of Nursing is teaching students valuable professional skills essential for meeting today’s health care needs and has had more than 1600 students successfully complete one or more of their programs.
