GWU Senior Prepares for Work with Peace Corps

SENIOR BRITTANY CAREY WILL BE SERVING IN RWANDA, AFRICA

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Gardner-Webb graduating senior (health and wellness major), Brittany Carey, will be leaving for Rwanda on January 26, 2009. She will be serving in the Peace Corps with HIV/AIDS relief. Carey began the long and grueling application process in January 2008. The process involved two essays, a resume, transcript, three references, background check, and medical screenings.

During those months, Carey was invited for an interview and officially received application placement for Sub-Sahara Africa. After an extensive physical and months of waiting, Carey was finally placed in Rwanda, Africa on November 25.

Carey has carried a passion for HIV/AIDS victims since high school. She describes a time in high school during Crossroads Youth Camp lead by Clayton King where she states, “I asked God to send me to Africa if it was his will. Now, he has answered that prayer.”

Carey explains that she is very excited about this opportunity to live in another part of the world, fulfill her dream, and minister to HIV/AIDS victims. She is wary about the different things she will experience in Sub-Sahara Africa such as illness etc.; but she knows that this is where God wants her, and through that knowledge she is not afraid.

“I have seen Brittany develop a passion for improving the quality of life for others,” says Dr. Franki Burch, associate professor of physical education, wellness, and sport studies. “A few years ago she came to me to explore her options in the Health and Wellness major. Since that time she has been motivated to acquire the knowledge, skills, compassion, and vision necessary to impact the world through health promotion. We will be praying that God builds a hedge of protection and support around Brittany as she serves selflessly in Africa over the next two years. We are honored to have been a part of Brittany’s education and are excited to share her journey.”

“Gardner-Webb has really provided me with a great education and support system,” Carey states, “It has taught me how to be passionate about things I love and to go out and live those dreams.”
