GWU Student Named as Intern for Kennedy Center

Sarah Huskey of Lyman, S.C. Receives This High Honor

BOILING SPRINGS, NC – Gardner-Webb University is proud to announce that Sarah Huskey, a GWU senior Music Business major from Lyman, S.C., has been selected to do an internship in music business at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.

The Kennedy Center is a living memorial to U.S. President John F. Kennedy.  According to its website, since opening in 1971, the Kennedy Center has continued its efforts to fulfill a vision to present the greatest performers and performances from across America and the world, nurturing new works and young artists, and serving the nation as a leader in arts education.

The Kennedy Center Internship Program offers on-the-job experience for college juniors, seniors, graduate students, and recent graduates who are interested in beginning careers in arts management or arts education.  During an internship, participants maintain a working portfolio and attend performances and workshops presented by the Center.  Lodging, per diem, travel, and materials are provided at no cost to participants.

“It’s an honor.  I had applied with several groups and didn’t expect to get that particular honor even though I felt good about the interview,” said Huskey.  Huskey will be working with Jazz Programming during her time with the Center from January through May 2009.

Huskey has worked as a student-worker under the direction of Gardner-Webb Department of Fine Arts Chair – Dr. Patricia Sparti and has also served as the organizer of the annual GWU Brass Festival for two years, and had an internship last summer at the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, N.C.

Sparti says that coveted internships like the one at Kennedy Center are extremely competitive.  “Students apply from all over the world, so this is a huge honor.  It will be the capstone project of her degree and she will be the first-ever Music Business major to graduate from Gardner-Webb,” said Sparti.

Huskey, a graduate of James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan, located in Spartanburg County, S.C. has a 4.0 grade point average and is scheduled to graduate from Gardner-Webb in May.

Located in Boiling Springs, NC, Gardner-Webb University is home to over 4,000 students from 39 states and 21 foreign countries.  Gardner-Webb seeks a higher ground in higher education – one that embraces faith and intellectual freedom, balances conviction with compassion, and inspires in students a love of learning and leadership.
