Event also Features Crest High School String Orchestra & Accomplished Teenage Harpist

BOILING SPRINGS, NC – The Gardner-Webb University/Cleveland County Orchestra will present a concert described by the GWU Department of Fine Arts as festive and exciting orchestral music by 75 musicians on Monday, November 16 at 8:00 p.m. in the Dover Theatre, located in the LYCC.  The event also features special guests: the Crest High School Advanced String Orchestra and Harp Soloist Hannah Blalock.

The Gardner-Webb University/Cleveland County Orchestra is under the direction of Dr. Patricia Sparti, who serves as chair for the GWU Department of Fine Arts.  The orchestra is made up of GWU students and faculty, and musicians from throughout the community.

Peter Strickland, a 1997 graduate of Gardner-Webb, is the director of the Crest High School Advanced String Orchestra. Blalock, the featured harpist, is an 11th grader from Matthews, N.C.  At such a young age, Blalock serves as principal harpist for the GWU Orchestra, the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the Charlotte Civic Orchestra.  Blalock has won numerous awards and honors as a harpist.

The concert will feature such musical selections as Claude Debussy - Danses Sacree et Profane, Rimsky-Korsakov - Procession of the Nobles, and Bernstein selections from West Side Story.

Sparti says this year's concert will feature standard orchestra instrumentation of strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion that will be supplemented by saxophones, banjo, and a great deal more percussion that usual.  "Every piece on this program is utterly fantastic and the orchestra is playing with great enthusiasm.  The program contains 61 minutes of music.  There is something for everyone," said Sparti.
