Webb Words Newletters

NOVEMBER 2009 EDITION

WELCOME TO WEBB WORDS

Before you take a look at the latest good news and information on individuals and departments at Gardner-Webb, Webb Words wants to remind you that it's that time of year again!  Samaritan's Purse is organizing the Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes again this year.  Gardner-Webb's Campus Ministries has ordered 100 boxes that they would like to see filled for children all over the world.

Empty shoeboxes are available in Teresa Davis's office, Suttle #107.  You may also return those no later than November 19.  Shipping costs $7.00 and if you would like to pay online you can register to track your box and see which continent or country it goes to.  Campus Ministries invites you to pray about picking up a a box, or you can go in as a small group.  You may also use your own shoebox if it is in good condition.  If you have questions, feel free to contact Campus Ministries at #4277 or Brittany Bounds at bbounds@gardner-webb.edu or Hannah Dagenhart at hdagenhart@gardner-webb.edu.

This edition includes the following sections.

Faculty & Staff News / Department News / Upcoming Events / Birthdays

Webb Words is presented by the Office of University & Media Relations on a monthly basis during fall and spring semesters.

FACULTY & STAFF NEWS

*DR. DONALD CAUDILL, PROFESSOR OF MARKETING IN THE GODBOLD SCHOOL OF BUSINESS established the Alfred and Shirley Wampler Caudill Endowed Fund with a generous gift to the University. The fund was initiated to express Dr. Caudill's commitment to Christian higher education and the values held by Gardner-Webb.  One of Don's favorite Winston Churchill quotes is "We make a living by what we get - we make a life by what we give."  This fund will provide an annual stipend for the Alfred and Shirley Wampler Caudill (graduating marketing major), the Alfred & Shirley Wampler Caudill Service Learning Award (any major), and other activities of the University. "God has blessed my personal investments and part-time businesses and I feel strongly about giving back. Everything we have belongs to God any way," said Don.  Dr. Caudill is a native of Norton, Virginia. Also, make sure to see "Department News" where details are shared about Caudill and other members of the Godbold School of Business who are making significant contributions to their department and University.

*MARY ALICE HODGES, PhDc, MSN, RN; BSN Program Director (School of Nursing), presented her dissertation at the North Carolina Association in Raleigh on October 8.  Mary presented "The Living Experience of the Older RN Working at the Bedside in Critical Care."

DEPARTMENT NEWS

dr. charles tichner*THE GODBOLD SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ALONG WITH THE UNIVERSITY ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE that several employees of the school of business have made tremendous contributions to provide for the school. Gifts have been planned by Dr. Charles Tichner (right), Dr. Don Caudill, and Dr. E. Denise Smith (left). All three have made planned gifts which will benefit the Godbold School of Business. It is through gifts such as these that the school will have funding for future programs and scholarships. All three gifts give a timely boost to the Godbold School of Business.

Dr. Tichner, Dr. Caudill, and Dr. Smith were also inducted into the Legacy Society of Gardner-Webb. This society is a recognition society for all who make a planned gift to the University. Planned giving compasses an arena of charitable giving in which the donor makes a donations to the University through vehicles such as annuities, trust, insurance policies, IRA distributions, or bequest in their estate plans. Planned giving offers an opportunity for individuals and family to make a transformational impact at Gardner-Webb. For more information about planned giving to your department or GWU, contact Greg Poe at #2157 or gpoe@gardner-webb.edu.

*GARDNER-WEBB'S SCHOOL OF NURSING will offer a new generic four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program starting in the fall of 2010. Approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, this 130 semester hour program will enable students to achieve a BSN from GWU through the traditional undergraduate on-campus program. The new program will provide a way of offering the BSN degree that the School of Nursing believes will meet important healthcare needs in the region. This degree will allow students to acquire an undergraduate education that is grounded in the liberal arts and will also prepare students to take the National License Exam for registered nurses (RN's). Dr. Rebecca Beck-Little, Dean of the GWU School of Nursing, sees the program as an enhancement to Gardner-Webb's diverse community of learning. "The program is comparable to the current academic programs at GWU. Students in the generic four-year BSN program will benefit from being allowed to complete their education through a curriculum plan that is considered the norm in a University setting," said Dr. Beck-Little.

*FROM HUMAN RESOURCES - THE ANNUAL GWU UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN kicks-off this week.  Now more than ever, the United Way of Cleveland County needs our support!  With an unemployment rate of almost 15%, the crisis has hit right here at home, and those who are impacted aren't strangers; they are family members, friends, and neighbors.  The GWU family has always risen to the occasion to land a helping hand to those in need.  The University's goal for this year's campaign is to increase the employee giving rate from 48% to 60%. So please, consider helping GWU meet this challenge by giving something, regardless of the amount.

All contributors to this year's United Way Campaign are invited to a United Way Campaign Celebration Breakfast on Friday, November 20 from 7:30 until 8:30 a.m. in the cafeteria.  Names of all contributors to the campaign will be entered into a drawing for prizes to be given away during the breakfast. Prizes include five $100.00 bills! You will be receiving a United Way Campaign packet from your Team Captain. This packet includes a letter from Dr. Bonner, a letter from Dawn Anthony (Alumni Relations), a list of the different levels to pick from when making a donation, a payroll deduction rate sheet, and a United Way of Cleveland County brochure. Your pledge form will need to be turned in to Frances Sizemore in Human Relations by Wednesday, November 18. Human Resources, Dawn Anthony, and everyone else involved with GWU's United Way Campaign thanks you in advance for anything you can do that supports the University's purpose to Engage Community through the United Way!

*ROTC NEWS - This month, the Gardner-Webb Army ROTC Program will honor past and present military personnel.  If you served in the military and would like your name listed in the display case located in the lobby of the Dover Library, please submit your name, branch and rank to Janie McClain #4375 by this Friday, November 6 at 12 noon.  If you are an ROTC graduate, please let her know that information as well.

*TEAM HOT DAWGS REPORT.  THAT'S RIGHT, TEAM HOT DAWGS -  GWU was represented as "Team Hot Dawgs" participated in the Greenville, S.C. MS Bike Ride during the first weekend of October to raise money for the fight against multiple sclerosis. 2009 marks the fourth consecutive year that a team from GWU participated in this event. As of the end of October, the team fund-raising totaled almost $2,400.  Riders included KENT BLEVENS (team captain), DON OLIVE, JUDY HOFF, TAYLOR DOOLITTLE, ADAM FISHER, and JUSTUS HAWKS.  Dr. James Dire did not make the ride, but helped the team with its fund-raising efforts.  Riders had a choice of routes ranging from 20 miles to 100 miles on that Saturday, and 20 miles to 70 miles on Sunday.  The six riders logged a total of over 700 miles for the weekend (WOW).  The highly visible and distinctive "Hot Dawg" jerseys elicited plenty of salutes form fellow riders and others.  Next year's event will be a ride to Myrtle Beach and will take place the last weekend of September.  Multiple sclerosis is a disease that affects hundres of thousands of Americans.  Anyone interested in participating in next year's ride as a way of joining the fight against this debilitating illness should contact Kent Blevins at kblevins@gardner-webb.edu.
