Announcement Regarding Discontinuation of December Commencement Ceremonies

In 2008, Gardner-Webb University added a December commencement ceremony to its academic calendar in order to accommodate the larger number of students completing their programs of study. Over the last few years, the number of graduates has returned to pre-2008 levels. Consequently, the University has decided to revert to its earlier practice of providing formal commencement ceremonies in May and in August. Consequently, no commencement ceremonies are planned for December 2017.

The time-honored tradition among American colleges and universities historically has been to host one commencement event per year at the conclusion of the Spring Semester of study. Many schools, like Gardner-Webb, have added a second event, while a third is relatively uncommon.

The graduation fees that students pay cover only a portion of the actual cost of the events. Returning to two commencement events will help the University control expenses, and thus, at least in a small way, will contribute to greater affordability for students.

The names of graduates completing their studies in December will be included in the May commencement bulletin. Those who choose to attend will receive their diploma at the May event. Those who choose not to attend will receive their diplomas by mail in January or February. Transcripts will reflect a December date of completion and will be available immediately following the conclusion of the Fall Semester.

While attendance is not required, it is the hope of the University community that graduates completing their studies in December will join the faculty and their fellow students for a formal celebration of the conclusion of their studies at May Commencement. Regardless, the University extends its congratulations and best wishes to all of our graduates on the occasion of this major milestone of their academic and professional journey.
