GWU Commitment

Recycling Plan 2008

Statement of Commitment

Environmental stewardship is a core value of Gardner-Webb University and part of our commitment to ―fostering dialogue and action in support of human welfare and environmental stewardship‖ (Statement of Values). We are committed as well to move the University toward sustainability, and this commitment includes implementation of campus-wide recycling.
We have made significant progress, and we will work continuously to improve. Beginning August 1, 2008 we are undertaking a major expansion of the recycling program. This effort will require the support and participation of every member of the University family—students, faculty, staff, trustees, friends, and visitors. I want to express my commitment to the recycling program, and I ask—and expect—that each member of the University family will join in this commitment.
Thank you for your participation in Gardner-Webb’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
Dr. A. Frank Bonner
President

Mission

Gardner-Webb University is committed to making a positive impact on the community and the environment surrounding its campuses.
The University is committed to promoting a comprehensive waste reduction operation and effective waste management practices.
The University is committed to providing the campus community with knowledge and resources to reduce disposal waste and properly manage waste streams.
Gardner-Webb University believes that it is the responsibility of everyone—faculty, staff, and students— to help develop a more environmentally sustainable campus.

Goals of Program

Gardner-Webb University intends:

  1. To make a positive impact on our campus, in our community and in the world that God has entrusted to us;
  2. To be good stewards in dealing with our waste, to reduce the waste we generate.

This plan relies on each individual to participate in making Gardner-Webb University an environmentally friendly place to live, work, and play.

ACTION PLAN

Central Recycling Stations

The University will establish a central recycling station in all buildings on campus.
Within that station there will be two receptacles for recyclable goods.
The green receptacle is designated for cardboard and office paper.
The blue receptacle, is designed for other recyclable goods (plastic, glass, aluminum, etc.)., which may be co-mingled

Offices in Administration & Educational Buildings

The University will provide each office with a blue receptacle for collecting recyclable goods from the individual’s office area.
Faculty/Staff members will determine what recyclable goods they wish to place in the container, and it will be their responsibility to empty their receptacles as needed. Faculty/Staff members may mix their recyclable goods, but they must sort the goods before placing them in the proper container at the central station.
Each office area will also have a non-recyclable waste container as the University will maintain its normal waste collection in addition to this recycling plan.
As recycling by faculty and staff is mandatory, housekeeping will not empty refuse containers which clearly contain recyclable goods

Classrooms

The University will provide each classroom with a blue receptacle for collecting recyclable goods.
Each classroom may be adopted by a Faculty/Staff member by calling 704-406-3235 otherwise these receptacles will be managed by the University's housekeeping staff.

Residence Halls

The University will provide each residence hall/apartment complex with a central recycling station. Students will be encouraged to collect their recyclable goods from their own room and deposit them in their respective stations. The University’s housekeeping department will monitor the central station and empty as needed.
Non-recyclable waste will continue to be collected and processed as it is currently being done.

Outdoors

The University will strategically place outdoor recycling and non recyclable receptacles around the campus. These sites will be monitored by the housekeeping staff.

Vendors & Contractors

The University will establish relationships with vendors/contractors and outside agencies that provide services on our facilities to ensure that they are providing goods that may be recycled.
In addition, we will work with them to develop best management practices that comply with the University’s recycling program.

E-Waste

For disposal of computer, light bulbs and other electronic waste please call 704-406-4330

Management of Recyclable Goods

The University has established a secure main recycling station at Plant Operations as a staging area for all recyclable goods collected on campus.
The University is partnering with Waste Management INC for the proper management and disposal of all recyclable materials.
