What are the lengths of the 5 rental periods offered?
There are rental terms for any type of school term. The five rental periods offered are 30 days, 45 days, 60 days, Quarter (90 days), and Semester (125 days). The rental period does not start until the books are delivered.
How does search work?
Enter title, author, or 10- or 13-character ISBN identifier in to the search field for a basic search. The ISBN always yields the most accurate result.
If the book being rented comes with an online access code/key/card/etc., will it work?
Supplemental materials of any kind are NOT guaranteed to come with the book.
Are there any membership fees?
No, the rental site does not charge any membership or subscription fees.
Will I get money back when the rental textbook is returned?
Since the rental charge is a fraction of the total book cost when the book is rented, no money is returned to the customer's credit/debit card once the book is returned on time.
What forms of payment can be used?
Currently, a credit or debit card must be used to rent from the rental site. Credit and debit cards with the MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover symbol are accepted.
Why might a credit/debit card be rejected?
The following are reasons why a credit/debit card may be denied:
- Insufficient funds
- Incorrect CVV number
- Billing address does not match cardholder's address
- Expiration date of the card is before the end of the rental period(s)
Will I be charged any sales tax?
Yes, sales tax for the state in which you live is charged.
What shipping methods are offered?
Ground, 2 Day, or Next Day.
Is the information submitted secure?
Anytime private information is submitted (e.g., name, address, or credit/debit card number) on the website, you will see the phrase "You are using our secure server" at the top of the page. This banner indicates that a secure connection is in place.
How can an order be tracked?
All shipments have a tracking number which provides the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery. To check the status of a shipment, login to My Account and click the "Track Shipment" link on the My Rentals page.
Can I check for their previous orders?
Yes. Go to My Account à Order History page. Order History summarizes all of your past orders, displaying the order date, number, and status. Click the "Order Number" to see the details of a particular order.
It's a few days past the delivery estimate; will the order be arriving soon?
Delivery estimates are approximations. If the order is not received on the same date as your delivery estimate, do the following:
- Check the tracking number for the order.
- Check if the tracking number shows that it was delivered or will be arriving soon.
- Contact Customer Service via the link on the website if unable to locate order.
Where is the order's estimated delivery date found?
Click the order number under Order History. The delivery estimate appears under the Track Shipment link.
How can a book be returned to the rental website for a refund?
Visit the refund page within 10 days of receiving the item, select the item and reason for return, and print a prepaid shipping label.
The book(s) must be shipped using the prepaid shipping label within 5 days. It is important to use the BookRenter prepaid shipping label and not another shipping method.
What should be done if a book arrives in a damaged condition?
To notify the warehouse of damage that occurred in transit or from previous use, contact Customer Service via the link on the website within 3 days of the order delivery.
What happens if a book is lost?
You are responsible for returning the book at the end of your rental period. If unable to do so, you will be charged 140% of the book's retail price minus the rental costs, plus a $10.00 service fee. Once charged, you opt out of the rental agreement and the book becomes their property.
What happens if a book is damaged during the rental period?
Books are required to be kept in like-new or better condition while in your possession. If a book sent back at the end of a rental period is damaged and rendered unusable, it will remain the property of the rental website and you will be charged the full retail value to replace it.
Supplementary materials such as CDs, DVDs, access codes, inserts, workbooks, study guides, etc., included with the book must be returned. For examples of like-new and damaged books, please refer to the quality chart below.
Required Condition - No Damage Fee
Firm cover with no noticeable damage. All pages must be intact (no creases, tears, or stains). There can be minimal writing or highlighting, but no damage to the binding.
Unacceptable Condition - Damage Fee Applies
Major Damage (full list price*)
The cover is noticeably damaged or missing. Pages are stained, missing, illegible, or otherwise warped. There is heavy writing and/or highlighting throughout the book. Any other case that renders the book unusable will also result in a major damage fee.
*List price is the list price of the book advertised on our site at the time of checkout.
Didn't get the book you ordered, what can be done?
Let Customer Service know that the wrong book was received within 3 days of the order being delivered and the book will be replaced.
Is writing or highlighting allowed in a rental book?
Yes, acceptable amounts of writing and highlighting are allowed.
How is the due date of the rental book calculated?
The rental period begins on the date the order arrives. The ending date of the rental period can be calculated by adding the number of days of the rental period to the date the order was received. The due date can be found by logging in to My Account and looking at the My Rentals àDue Date page. When returning rentals, the shipment must be dropped off at a UPS location by the due date displayed on the My Rentals page. Once boxed and labeled, the shipment can be dropped off at the GWU Post Office for UPS pickup.
Will I receive any money back if a rental is returned early?
No, there is no refund to your credit/debit card for any amount if rental is sent back before its due date.

What are extensions?
Extensions are the option to prolong a rental beyond its due date. Extensions are offered for 5 different lengths of time: 10, 30, 45, 60, and 90 days.
How is a rental extended?
Go to the My Account à Extensions page. At the Extensions page, select how many days to add to the rental (10, 30, 45, 60, or 90 days). Add the extension to the bag and complete the check out process.
For how long can a rental be extended?
Extensions can add an extra 10, 30, 45, 60, or 90 days to the rental due date.
Is there a limit to how many times a rental can be extended?
No, the book rental may be extended as many times as needed.
How am I charged if I buy an extension?
When you extend a rental, you will be asked for credit/debit card information at the end of the checkout process. Your credit/debit card entered will be charged for the price of the extension.
Once a rental is extended, where can the new due date be found?
The new due date is shown on the My Rentals and the Extensions pages.
What if the due date falls on a weekend or a holiday?
If a due date is on a weekend or holiday, you should take the return to a UPS location on the following business day.
Important: You will need to print out the return shipping label before the due date, even if the due date falls on a weekend or holiday.
How are books returned at the end of the rental period?
Please follow the steps below for a smooth return:
- Login: Select the books to be returned on the Rental Return page and confirm the shipping address
- Print: Print the packing slip and shipping label.
- Package: Securely seal the package with the books being returned and the packing slip. For postage, the prepaid UPS shipping label must be used.
- Ship: Drop the package off at any UPS Location or GWU Post Office.
To the Customer: Standard shipping is FREE; next-day and two-day shipping is available for almost all books; delivery dates are guaranteed; and everything is trackable online.
Return Shipping: Returns are FREE and easy-just log-in, print the packaging label, place it securely on the package with the books, and drop it off at any UPS store or box.
Orders are processed for shipping in 1-2 business days. Business days are Monday through Friday, excluding holidays obserbed by the Post Office and FedEx, such as New Year's Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
How should the rental(s) for return be packaged?
When sending the rental(s) back, you can use the box the book(s) arrived in.
Important: If using this box or any other previously used box, cover or mark out all old labels and markings.
Any size box or mailer can be used to send the book(s) back, as long as it sufficiently holds the book(s) plus packaging material, which should be used to avoid any in-transit damage. Boxes and packaging materials can be purchased at most mail centers.
Will I receive a reminder when the rental is due?
The website automatically sends reminders via email to you at 7, 3, and 1 day(s) before a rental is due.
There is also an option for SMS/text messages to be sent to your cell phone. To send reminder text message alerts to a cell phone, add the mobile number to the account profile.
*Are there any late fees?
If the book is not postmarked by the end of the rental period, you (the customer) will be charged 20% of the book's list price and the rental will be extended by 14 days.
If the book has not been returned by the end of this 14-day extension, you will be charged a Book Never Returned fee, which covers the cost of replacing the book. This fee is equal to 140% of the book list price minus the rental costs and the cost of the 14-day extension, plus a $10.00 service fee. Once you are charged, you opt out of the rental agreement and the book becomes your property.
