Where Can I Volunteer?

Alexander Youth Network

This is a program for students who have trouble functioning in the normal classroom.  They are always in need of good examples and interactions with older "teens" and college students

Volunteer Opportunities:  On-going mentoring, group activities, crafts or projects.

CIS Thrift Store

Sales from CIS Thrift support the Community In Schools program.

Habitat for Humanity 

Helping those in Cleveland County with housing needs, whether it be repairing existing structures or building houses from the ground up, the organization gives you the opportunity to physically help someone in need.

Shelby Pres Soup Kitchen

Preparing food, serving food, washing dishes and building relationships with the needy in Cleveland County.

Volunteer Opportunities: Serve lunch, organize food storage, pick up food from donation locations, fellowship, meal planning

Requirements: No background check needed

YMCA Girl’s Club

An afterschool program specifically for girls run through the Cleveland County YMCA, this is a great opportunity for GW females to mentor and spend time with girls that need positive role models in their lives.

Volunteer Opportunities: Serve lunch, organize food storage, pick up food from donation locations, fellowship, meal planning

Requirements: Volunteer application (1-2 days processing time)

Interfaith Alliance / Cleveland County Rescue Mission

This organization runs the Men's Homeless Shelter in Shelby. It is an alliance of churches in Cleveland County, working together to help the homeless in the community. They are in need of Bible Study leaders, shelter volunteers, and various projects.

Volunteer Opportunities: Events, fundraising, supply drives, internship, shelter coverage, teaching, cleaning

Requirements: Volunteer application.

Days & Times Available: Shelter coverage needed at night. All other is dependent upon event.

Abuse Prevention Council

This organization runs the Women's Homeless Shelter in Shelby and also is in charge of the 24 hour domestic violence and sexual assault hotline. They not only provide housing for women in crisis situations, but also provide counseling services, case management, and safe houses for women who have been in sexual assault, housing crises or abusive situations.

CC Children’s Homes

Children who have unfit family situations with no other place to go are put under protective services and placed in a home. Sometimes this happens through foster parents and sometimes through the Children's Home. With two homes in Shelby, Aarons' Home (1st-6th grade) and James' Home (6th grade-graduation), this organization is always in need of mentors, volunteers, and fun events!

Volunteer Opportunities: Visiting and tutoring children.

Hospice of Cleveland County

Hospice is an organization that creates a living and peaceful environment for patients who are terminal or in their last stages of life. The patients and families always need encouragement, love, and smiles during this difficult time of transition in their lives.

Volunteer Opportunities: Administrative duties, activities for patients, fundraising activities, donations to thrift store.

Requirements: Volunteer app required for long-term volunteering. One-time volunteering doesn’t require volunteer application.

Harvest Works

Hospice is an organization that creates a living and peaceful environment for patients who are terminal or in their last stages of life. The patients and families always need encouragement, love, and smiles during this difficult time of transition in their lives.

Communities in Schools

This mentoring program works to keep at-risk students in school and teach them the importance of having an education. They have individual mentoring programs, as well as afterschool tutoring programs in the local middle and high schools.

Volunteer Opportunities: Mentors/lunch buddies (for middle & high schools). Social media/technology volunteer. Fundraising events.

BS Elementary School

Two excellent programs to participate in; lunch buddies and study buddies. Lunch Buddies pairs college students with elementary school students for lunch a couple times a week to build relationships and provide positive role models. Study Buddies is more classroom focused, allowing the GWU student to be in the classroom helping a hand full of students who need extra attention.

Crest/Shelby Middle

There are many needs in the local middle schools for great role models and mentors, so whether be in the classroom or eating lunch, there are many opportunities to positively impact a young persons' life.

CC Potato Project

The CC Potato Project grows, harvests, and distributes white and sweet potatoes to locals who find themselves without food. This organization is run solely on volunteers!

Volunteer Opportunities: Planting potatoes (Spring) and Harvesting (Summer & Fall), also special projects are welcome (i.e. soil tests, etc.) Social media volunteers needed.

Miracle Hill Ministries (Gaffney, SC) 

Miracle Hill offers opportunities for students to work with people transitioning from lifestyles of addiction and homelessness. Individuals as well as groups of up to 12 people can serve weekdays, nights and weekends in the following areas:

  • Daily meal preparation and service

  • Organizing food pantry

  • Organizing clothes closet/thrift store

  • Reception desk/office 

  • Tutoring adults in basic literacy and math skills

  • Life skills coaching

  • Seasonal events such as holiday decorating

  • Spending time with program residents

  • Chapel Services/programs for residents
