Lieutenant

Gardner-Webb University invites applicants for the Lieutenant, University Police. This position plans, organizes, oversees, and coordinates the daily activities of the Police Department. Manages police officers who provide personal, real property, and equipment security throughout campus, ensuring consistent and equitable enforcement of local, state, and federal laws. Reviews and approves reports on incident and crime investigations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages the patrol division of the police department; relays orders and messages from superior.
  • Reviews police reports and logbooks to ascertain that information is recorded in conformance with regulations; determines the need for follow-up; determines appropriate distribution throughout the campus community.
  • Administrator of Omnigo Software (Incident Reports, Daily Log, flagging Cleary reports, annual Cleary Reporting and printing of statistical reports)
  • Administrator of Body Camera Software
  • Evidence Custodian (collection and storage of physical evidence, body camera footage and video surveillance camera footage)
  • Review and approval of time sheets for all fulltime and part-time officers and administrative staff
  • Administrator of ID Card Software (Build new ID card templates and modify existing templates)
  • Teaching Emergency Preparedness classes to faculty/staff and students
  • Write policy and procedure for Campus Police Department
  • Manage traffic accident reports (reviewing, approving and mailing accident reports to NCDMV)
  • Manage Sexual Assault Kit tracking and reporting
  • Scheduling of Campus Police Officers for on duty and off duty events

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited law enforcement academy; at least 5 years of supervisory experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. State of North Carolina Certified Law Enforcement Officer.
  • Recommended to have a working knowledge of how the North Carolina Criminal Justice Standards requires the state mandated paperwork prepared for all new hires.
  • Recommended to have a working knowledge what state mandated training is mandatory and required each year to include the F-9 submitted annually
  • Recommended to possess BS/AS degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of faculty and/or staff hiring procedures.
  • Knowledge of police reporting and recordkeeping policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapts, and applies guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment with local law enforcement
  • Knowledge of management principles and practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Employee development and performance management skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of police protocols, procedures, and methodology.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must maintain certification status.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment but must be able to work as a shift officer as needed
