The Graduate Certificate in English provides working adults the opportunity to teach at the community college level, in an early college, and/or seek adjunct work in other university settings.

Graduate Admissions

Completing the Graduate Certificate in English will prepare you to teach at the community college, early college, or adjunct instructor at the university level. The course requires you to complete 18 credit hours and allows you to easily transfer into the online Master of Arts in English program.

The following courses are required to complete this certificate.

Spring
ENGL 671 (3) Literary Criticism
Elective #1 (3) (any ENGL course, except ENGL 690-696)

Summer
Elective #2 (3) (any ENGL course, except ENGL 690-696)
Elective #3 (3) (any ENGL course, except ENGL 690-696)

Fall
ENGL 683 (3) Teaching of Writing
Elective #4 (3) (any ENGL course, except ENGL 690-696)

To be admitted into the Graduate Certificate in English program, the following admissions requirements must be met:

  1. 3.0 GPA is expected
  2. At least three references
  3. Student should possess a bachelor’s degree in English or similar field. If student does not possess a bachelor’s degree in English or similar field (ex. Communications, Literary Studies), then 12-15 hours of upper level English courses is required, approved by the program coordinators upon evaluating transcripts

No standardized tests are required for admission into this program.
