Shelby Civil Right Trail Marker

YOU’RE INVITED!

Join us on Saturday, February 19, at 10 am for the unveiling ceremony of the Shelby Civil Rights Trail Marker. The sign will be unveiled in front of Buffalo Creek Gallery on Warren Street, formerly Smith’s Drug Store, where one of the sit-ins took place on February 18, 1960. A ceremony will take place immediately following on the Warren Street side of the Court Square on the lawn. More details will be coming soon!

History of the Sit-In Movement:

The Sit-In Movement was a series of peaceful protests during the Civil Rights era and began on February 1, 1960, in Greensboro, North Carolina, when four Black college students sat down at Woolworth’s “white’s only” lunch counter and refused to leave after being denied service. This sit-in drew national attention and sparked sit-ins and demonstrations across the South. Seventeen days later, on February 18, 1960, a group of Black Shelby youth protested segregation by staging sit-ins in Shelby at Smith’s Drug Store and the lunch counter at the local bus stop. The effort of the brave young men and women during these sit-ins helped advance civil rights efforts in our country and our community.

It is our desire to recognize those from our community who chose to stand against segregation, during a time when they faced harsh opposition and racism. We seek to memorialize their courage and their unwavering dedication to bring awareness to civil rights issues in our nation. The Civil Rights Trail Marker in Shelby will be a permanent reminder of where we have come from, and serve as the inspiration to continue to work together as we strive to ensure the civil rights of all people.
