Home / People / Dr. Matt Whitfield Dr. Matt Whitfield Professor of Music Biography Matt Whitfield is a professor of music and teaches composition and theory, as well as applied clarinet/saxophone, at Gardner-Webb University. He received both his MM and DMA degrees from The University of Alabama, where he studied composition with Fred Goossen, Andrew Imbrie, Hubert Howe, Marvin Johnson, and Harry Phillips. Whitfield is a member of the Society of Composers, Inc. (SCI), College Music Society, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. His compositions have been performed throughout the South. Dr. Whitfield is co-advisor of the GWU Student SCI chapter.
