Career Fast Track

Matt Skeen

Gardner-Webb University alumnus Matt Skeen has been a member of six NASCAR Sprint Cup championship teams in the 10 years since earning his bachelor’s degree. The 2007 GWU graduate serves as a physical trainer for pit crews for Hendrick Motorsports (HMS).

“I design and implement strength protocols, instruction, supervision and evaluation of all pit crew members,” Skeen explains. “I make sure they are strong, fast and flexible enough to perform their duties around the racecar as fast as possible.”

Gardner-Webb prepared Skeen for his career through experiences in the exercise science program and as a student-athlete on the GWU football team. The University also connected him with an internship with HMS while he was still an undergraduate student.

That opportunity created a fast track to a full-time job training the pit crews for drivers Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kasey Kahne and Chase Elliot. His work in strength and conditioning has already helped produce two Mechanix Wear Pit Crews of the Year and an All-Star Pit Crew Championship.

Skeen credits Gardner-Webb with building friendships that helped him advance his career and continue to offer meaningful benefits. “There are no limits at GWU,” he asserts. “Academically, spiritually and athletically, Gardner-Webb can offer you everything you need to get to the next step in your life.”
