Gardner-Webb Presents 2019 Advent Devotional Book

Advent Reflections

Gardner-Webb University is proud to present the 2019 Advent Devotional as a guide for reflecting on the birth of Jesus Christ and focusing on the holy blessings of the Christmas season.

The daily Advent readings are available as a traditional printed booklet and online in digital format.

In the introduction, Dr. William M. Downs, GWU president, writes, “For Christians, Advent is a time of great expectation and preparation. We look forward to trumpeting the nativity of Jesus, and in doing so we are filled with renewed hope, peace, joy, and love. In these pages, members of the Gardner-Webb community share with you their individual thoughts as we march through December and arrive at the blessed day of Jesus’ birth.”

Throughout the devotional, the University’s students, faculty and staff members offer perspectives on the Advent season. Each day’s entry provides a personal reflection by a Gardner-Webb writer and includes suggested scriptures for further study. The entry for Christmas Day is written by Downs.

Editorial work for the devotional was provided by Dr. Jim McConnell, associate professor of New Testament interpretation, Lisa Hollifield, School of Divinity administrative assistant, Dr. Cal Robertson, associate professor of biblical studies, and Dr. Danny West, professor of preaching and pastoral studies.

The work honors the memory of beloved colleague, Dr. Dan Goodman, who launched this initiative years ago. His legacy is perpetuated by the embossed star that always adorns the front cover of the book.
