Ted Alexander Recognizes Team with Senatorial Statement

State Senator Honors GWU Men’s Basketball

North Carolina State Senator Ted Alexander has submitted a Senatorial Statement to congratulate the Gardner-Webb University Men’s Basketball Team on its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

“Winning the Big South Conference Men’s Basketball Championship was a milestone for Gardner-Webb University and going on to the NCAA Tournament was monumental,” noted Alexander. “Recognizing Gardner-Webb for this achievement is a tribute to the players, the coaches and the entire University and their accomplishments. I’m honored to be able to make this presentation to Gardner-Webb.”

Alexander represents District 44, which encompasses Cleveland, Lincoln and a portion of Gaston counties. The Senatorial Statement will be presented to all 50 senators for approval and signed by Lt. Gov. Dan Forrest. Once approved, the statement will be entered into the senate record. The full text of the statement is shown below.

Congratulating The Men's Basketball Team At Gardner-Webb University On Its First
NCAA Division I Tournament

WHEREAS, Gardner Webb University is a private, Christian, liberal arts university emphasizing a strong student centered experience and rigorous academics while preparing students to become effective leaders in the global community; and

WHEREAS, Gardner Webb University began from a movement initiated by the Kings Mountain Baptist Association in 1903. Later joined by the Sandy Run Baptist Association, the Boiling Springs High School was chartered on December 2, 1905; and

WHEREAS, the University was named for Governor O. Max Gardner, his wife Fay Webb, and their families for their ardent support of the institution; and

WHEREAS, in January 1993, the institution officially became known as Gardner Webb University. Today, Gardner Webb is a flourishing national institution, with students from 39 states and 19 foreign countries; and

WHEREAS, Gardner Webb University is one of only three doctoral degree granting private universities in North Carolina and offers comprehensive academic programming with more than 60 majors and minors for the undergraduate and graduate student, including a wide variety of online programs as well as hands on opportunities for missions and service; and

WHEREAS, Gardner Webb University also has an outstanding tradition in intercollegiate athletics to complement its academic stature, offering its student athletes a chance to compete in 22 NCAA Division I sports. The men's basketball team under the leaders of Coach Tim Craft had an outstanding season, earning the University its first NCAA Division I Tournament berth;

NOW, THEREFORE, the men's basketball team and coaching staff at Gardner Webb University deserve to be recognized and commended for demonstrating excellence in athletics and sportsmanship during the team's first ever NCAA Division I Tournament appearance.
