Basketball, Wrestling and Swimming Gear up for Action

Winter Sports Preview

As the winter sports season gets underway, fans are eager to see if Gardner-Webb's men’s basketball team will repeat as Big South Conference champions. The women’s basketball team has high hopes this year as 10 players return, including three of the top scorers from last season. Gardner-Webb wrestling and swimming programs see action in November, as well.

Here’s a look at the opening dates for the teams.

Men's basketball
The non-conference schedule begins Nov. 5 at home against Furman. The first conference game will be at Campbell (Buies Creek, N.C.) on Jan. 2. The team will face Presbyterian for the Big South Conference home opener on Jan. 4 and then play Radford on Jan. 8.

Women’s basketball
The women’s basketball team will play an 11-game, non-conference slate that begins on Nov. 5 when they take on the Charlotte 49ers. On Nov. 7, the women will welcome Chowan to Boiling Springs for the home opener. The women’s basketball team begins conference play on Dec. 28 when they head to Longwood University. Gardner-Webb wrestling opens the season on the road with a pair of tournaments, kicking off the year on Nov. 3 at the Hokie Open in Blacksburg, Va., before taking part in the Appalachian Invite in Boone, N.C., on Nov. 9. Gardner-Webb opens its home slate on Dec. 18 with a match against Franklin and Marshall.

While GWU swimming launched its 2019-20 campaign in September, the next event for the women will be at home on Nov. 8 against UNC-Asheville.
