Gardner-Webb Plans Activities to Promote Intercultural Understanding

Celebrating Diversity Month

April is Celebrate Diversity Month, started in 2004 to recognize and honor the diversity that exists in society.

Jackie Leach, director of the Gardner-Webb University’s Office of Diversity and Intercultural Initiatives, and Jenny Humphries, director of International Student Services, are planning events on the GWU campus to celebrate the month.

“I hope through the activities and visuals our students will recognize that no matter how different or alike we are from each other, we can complement each other,” Leach observes. “I hope they learn they matter, and they have a voice to be heard.”

Since starting her position, Leach has coordinated monthly programs aimed at promoting intercultural understanding, awareness, and collaboration.

“My goal is to create safe spaces to have hard conversations,” Leach observed. “They can talk about equality issues among races and sexes. I want to see students become more vocal about concerns they have and become an advocate for themselves here at Gardner-Webb and in the real world.”

This month’s events include a “Tie-dyeversity” activity, where students can connect while making a tie-dye shirt. Everything will be set up in front of Tucker on April 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. The other event is the monthly Diversity Education series, which will be on April 10 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the First Floor Lobby of Tucker Student Center. The topic is “Diversity in Worship,” and the group will explore the different ways that people express their faith.

Leach invites all students to share their ideas and concerns on any issue. Contact her at 704-406-2647 or jleach1@gardner-webb.edu.
