University Recognizes Hall of Fame Alum While Celebrating GWU Basketball

Hoopscoming 2019

Alumni and friends of Gardner-Webb are invited to Hoopscoming 2019, a celebration of the University’s basketball program, on Feb. 16 in Porter Arena. The event recognizes all basketball alumni and honors alumnus Artis Gilmore and the GWU 1968-69 championship team.

“Alumni Relations and the Bulldog Club are pleased to host Hoopscoming 2019,” said Leah Robinson Clevenger, director of alumni relations. “What has been the annual Lettermen’s Day for men’s basketball has now become a celebration of the men and women of GWU basketball.”

After graduating from GWU, Gilmore played professional basketball for 17 years. He was named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011.

“We have a rich tradition in men’s basketball that spans several generations, and Artis Gilmore was a trailblazer for our program in the late 1960s,” observed GWU head coach Tim Craft. “He is a legend here at Gardner-Webb and across all levels of basketball. We are honored to have Artis back on campus, as well as his teammates from 1968-1969. Not many teams can count a Naismith Hall-of-Famer as one of their own, and we are proud of what Artis has accomplished on and off the court since he walked across this campus 50 years ago.”

Action begins at 2 p.m. when the women take on Campbell University. The men play Winthrop University at 5 p.m. Basketball alumni will be recognized during the halftimes of both games and are invited to attend team shoot arounds: women from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and men from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Tickets are $5 per person and provide admission to both games. Purchase at the door or in advance by calling athletics at 704-406-4340.

Alumni and friends are invited to a free lunch in Tucker Student Center. Registration is required by Feb. 10.
