GWU Department of Music Hosts Concerts by Students and Guest Artists

Musical Showcase

Throughout the fall semester, the Gardner-Webb University School of Performing Arts’ Department of Music hosts a variety of free concerts that are open to the public. Events feature student groups, guest musicians in the Distinguished Artist Series, and a concert to benefit feeding programs in the community.

The Department is planning to present:

• Concert Choir and Chorale, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. in Dover Theatre. Directed by Paul Etter and Morgan C. Soja.

• Gardner-Webb Choral Clinic, Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m., Dover Theatre. Features high school choirs from around the region directed by guest clinician, Dr. Judy Bowers from the University of Louisiana – Monroe.

• Distinguished Artist Series presents vocalist Dr. Bradley Willard, Nov. 1, begins at 4 p.m. with an information session in Gardner Recital Hall, O. Max Gardner building. A master class will be held at 8 p.m. in Blanton Auditorium, Hamrick Hall. Co-sponsored by The Alfred & Shirley Wampler Caudill Foundation.

• Jazz Collective, Nov. 15, 8 p.m., Dover Theatre. Directed by Wally West.

• GWU Symphonic Band, Nov. 27, 8 p.m., Dover Theatre. Special guest will be cellist Bonnie Scruggs, 2014 alumna and band director at Crest High School in Shelby, N.C. Conductor is Mark Cole.

• Festival of Lights, annual Christmas Celebration, Nov. 29, 7 p.m., begins in Dover Theatre. Includes lighting of the Christmas Tree, luminaries, caroling and holiday refreshments.

• The GWU/Cleveland County Orchestra, Dec. 3, 8 p.m., Dover Theatre. Conducted by Patricia Sparti with special guests the Crest High School Advanced Orchestra and violin solos by distinguished artists, Mark O’Connor, four-time Grand Masters Fiddle Champion and three-time Grammy Award winner, and Maggie O’Connor, (co-sponsored by The Alfred & Shirley Wampler Caudill Foundation) and additional solos by Calin Lupanu, Concertmaster, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and GWU Violin Professor, and Monica Boboc, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra Violinist and GWU Violin Professor.

• Concert for a Cause with the GWU University Chorale, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 320 Old Boiling Springs Road, Shelby, N.C. Morgan C. Soja conducts the Chorale. Others joining the program are the Treble Ensemble and Handbell Ensemble, directed by Jondra Harmon; and the Old Time Ensemble, directed by Bruce Moser. This is a fundraiser for the church’s "Empty Tummies Ministry." Canned goods, toiletries, and monetary donations happily accepted.
