Gardner-Webb President Names Brian Arnold as Interim Vice President of Student Development

Brian Arnold

A GWU Alumnus, Arnold Has Served Gardner-Webb Since 2007

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Gardner-Webb University President Dr. William M. Downs has named Brian Arnold to serve as interim vice president of Student Development and dean of students. Now in his 13th year at GWU, Arnold also serves as director of Campus Recreation, Student Activities and New Student Orientation. Arnold’s appointment began Sept. 11, 2020, and will continue until the University completes its national search for a new vice president.

“I am grateful to Brian Arnold for stepping up and standing in as our leader in this important university division,” praised Downs. “These are extraordinary times, and we have great confidence in Brian to help us navigate through them successfully. Brian shares and embodies GWU’s core values and he is unwavering in his dedication to our students. Importantly, Brian is surrounded by a talented team in Student Development. It’ll be full speed ahead.”

In his interim position, Arnold will report directly to the president. His responsibilities will include leadership and oversight of the Center for Personal and Professional Development, Student Activities, Campus Recreation and New Student Orientation, Counseling Center, Housing and Residence Education, Multicultural Affairs and International Student Services, Title IX Compliance and ADA Coordination, and University Police.

GWU’s Division of Student Development has been especially instrumental in handling student wellness issues during the protracted COVID-19 pandemic. Together, staff in this area have coordinated housing and meal deliveries to quarantined students, helped transport symptomatic students to testing sites, and enforced compliance of the University’s health safety rules.

“Gardner-Webb has been a part of my life for a long time; my wife and I met and were married here. I love this community,” noted Arnold.

Arnold received a Master of Divinity in Pastoral Care and Counseling from Gardner-Webb in 2007 and his Bachelor of Arts in religious education from GWU in 2004.

Located in the North Carolina foothills, Gardner-Webb University is a private, Christian, liberal arts university. Gardner-Webb emphasizes a strong student-centered experience and rigorous academics to prepare students to become effective leaders within the global community.
