Gardner-Webb Online’s Popular 10-Month Master of Public Administration Offers Open Enrollment in April

Affordable and Flexible Program Prepares Public Servants for Successful Administrative Careers in Government or Non-profit Agencies

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The affordability and flexibility of Gardner-Webb Online’s 10-month Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree attracted many students like Michael Taylor, of Kingston, Tenn., to enroll in the first term. The successful program launched in January with two cohorts to meet the demand, and enrollment continues to exceed expectations.

The MPA is offered in eight-week terms with new classes beginning every eight weeks. Open enrollment occurs three times a year, with the next start date being April 24.

For Taylor, the new program at GWU ended his 10-year search for a degree that would apply to his profession and accommodate his demanding work schedule. A billboard advertising GWU’s 10-month MPA prompted him to look for more information on this master’s degree that prepares public servants for successful administrative careers in local, state, federal, and non-profit agencies.

“After some research on the program and a great conversation with the friendly staff in the graduate admissions office, I realized Gardner-Webb was the perfect fit for me,” stated Taylor, who also started a new job in January as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Knox Education Foundation in Knoxville, Tenn.

Professors instruct students in various aspects of the job, including law and management, budgeting and fiscal administration, grant research and writing and other topics essential for success in the field.

“I believe this program will further develop my skills,” Taylor added. “It has given me the opportunity to focus on some much needed professional and leadership development. The material aligns well with my job in the non-profit sector, giving me useful applications in my organization.”

Offered 100 percent online and with tuition under $20,000 for the 2023 academic year, the MPA is geared toward working professionals like Taylor. In addition, through the First Responder’s Grant, eligible students receive a discount on tuition, which is renewable through the completion of their program. Tuition prices are subject to change each year.

Professor and Chair of the Department of Public Service Dr. Bobbie Cox wrote the program with an emphasis on real-world ethical applications of content. “The skills and knowledge that students learn should be something they can use,” Cox stipulated. “The grant writing course is one of the most popular. I hope students can develop a real source of funding, and their research it can become part of their capstone.”

The faculty teach from the practical experience they gained while working in public administrations for state and local governments and non-profit agencies. They stay current on trends by networking with people in the profession and joining professional organizations to learn about new legislation and other relative topics.  

Taylor appreciates the commitment of the faculty, their background in the field, depth of knowledge and availability. “They are approachable and accessible and take the time to get to know you personally,” Taylor praised. “I have developed great relationships with the professors. They are always willing to talk through any questions and concerns. It has been a valuable learning experience.”
