category: Faculty Emeriti - In Memory Of Deck Wallace Andrews By Office of University Communications On August 25, 2022 Professor Emeritus of Business Deck Wallace Andrews Deck Wallace Andrews (1912-1999) was born in Rutherford County, N.C., the son of Samuel and Geneva Wallace Andrews. He graduated from Rutherford-Spindale Central High School in North Carolina in 1930 and attended Lees-McRae College from 1933-1935. After leaving Lees-McRae, Andrews worked in textiles until 1942. He entered the United States Air Force as an enlisted person on Oct. 16, 1942. He was appointed as a flight officer in 1945 and was discharged in 1946. He attended Wofford College (1946-1948) where he earned the Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. During the summers while teaching at Wofford College, Andrews earned his Master of Science degree in Business Administration and Accounting from the University of Georgia. On April 15, 1938, Andrews married Lois Long, daughter of Captain T.T. and Mildred Hollifield Long of Forest City, N.C. They had no children. He had three brothers: George Andrews, the late Horace Andrews, and the late Dr. Charles Andrews, who taught in and was chair of the Gardner-Webb Foreign Language Department. Andrews attended First Presbyterian Church in Forest City for 28 years. He served as deacon, elder, church treasurer, and president of the Men of the Church. He was elder emeritus. Upon moving to Skylyn Place, Spartanburg, S.C., Andrews and his wife joined Westminister Presbyterian Church. Andrews began his teaching career at Wofford College in 1948 and remained there until 1956. He then taught at East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, N.C., from 1956-1962. While teaching at East Mecklenburg, he enjoyed working with gifted children at Western Carolina University. Upon leaving East Mecklenburg in 1962, Andrews began his long career at Gardner-Webb College (now Gardner-Webb University). During his tenure at Gardner- Webb, Andrews was chairman of the Business Administration Department, taught accounting and business law and sponsored Pi Gamma Mu, a business fraternity. Andrews retired from Gardner-Webb in 1977 and was elected professor emeritus of business. He was active in Civitans and the Lions Club. In retirement, he and his wife resided at Skylyn Place until his death in 1999. Andrews enjoyed reading, golfing, and playing cards. Source: Personal Interviews – Albert Huffman
