BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Gardner-Webb University and Cleveland County Schools have signed a Dual Enrollment Memorandum of Understanding that will create new opportunities for high school students to earn college credit while completing their secondary education. The partnership is scheduled to begin in Fall 2027.

The agreement establishes a framework for eligible students attending Burns High School, Crest High School, Kings Mountain High School, Shelby High School, Turning Point Academy and Cleveland Innovations to enroll in select Gardner-Webb courses for both high school and college credit.

Through the partnership, Gardner-Webb will provide academic advising, enrollment assistance and access to approved college coursework, helping students gain an early start on their higher education journey while exploring future academic and career pathways.

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Nicole Waters expressed her thanks to everyone who worked to establish the dual enrollment agreement. “Cleveland County Schools’ commitment to cultivating excellence through student-centered educational experiences aligns with our shared goal of helping students reach their highest potential,” she noted. “We are proud to become part of that journey by offering students the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school. I am grateful to the team that made this opportunity a reality! Together, we are committed to providing courses that challenge students, build their confidence, and prepare them for college success.”

Dual-enrolled students will work with Gardner-Webb academic advisors to navigate course selection and degree planning. The University will also provide grade reporting and student support services to help ensure student success.

Dr. Brian Hunnell, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for Cleveland County Schools, highlighted the benefits of the agreement. “This partnership will provide our students with additional opportunities to earn college credit while they are still in high school and help better prepare them for their future after graduation,” he stated. “We greatly appreciate Gardner-Webb University’s willingness to partner with Cleveland County Schools and invest in our students.”

The partnership reflects a shared commitment to increasing educational opportunities for students throughout Cleveland County while strengthening connections between secondary and higher education. By earning college credits before graduation, participating students can accelerate progress toward a degree, explore academic interests and experience the expectations of college-level coursework.
