2024 Advent Devotion: Day 8

Sunday,  December 10

Malachi 3:1-4; Philippians 1:3-11; Luke 3:1-6

Most likely you have experienced a phone call from someone saying, “I’m on my way to your house.” Immediately, after ending the call, you rush to the closet, grab a broom, vacuum, trash bags, and whatever else is needed to ensure that your house is prepared to receive company.

This is the meaning of Advent, preparing our hearts to receive our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ, because He’s on the way!

However, you will not be responsible for the cleaning and “fixing” things up; our Lord and Savior will take care of that responsibility. That’s right! Our Lord and Savior will be like the strongest cleansing agent in the laundry machine, a cleanser of dirty clothes, scrubbing every stain and brushing every blemish until the fabric of our hearts is refined like gold and silver, fit and pleasing to God. The only thing you need to do is open the door to your heart and let Him in because He’s on the way!

Our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ, is not only coming to cleanse our heart to make it fit and pleasing to God, but He is coming to remove the old furniture, the old way of living and establish a new and right way of living through His work of salvation, a work that requires our cooperation, but a work that only God begins and will bring to full completion. Until we cease to have breath

in our mortal bodies, the Lord will provide grace so that we will be prepared for the Lord’s Advent, “the day” of Christ Jesus.

He’s on the way! So, the prayer written by the Apostle Paul, almost 2000 years ago, is still relevant today: “That your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what really matters, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.”

Prepare your heart, He’s on the way!
