Gardner-Webb Athletes of the Week for Nov. 25 and Dec. 2 Recognized for Accomplishments on the Court and in the Pool

Honors Presented to Justin Bender, Maja Rohkohl, Elze Motekaityte and Anthony Selden

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—After a weekend of noteworthy performances, junior Justin Bender of the Gardner-Webb University swimming team and freshman Maja Rohkohl of the Gardner-Webb women’s basketball team were named GWU Athletes of The Week for Nov. 25.

For the week of Dec. 2, graduate forward Elze Motekaityte of the Gardner-Webb women’s basketball team, and graduate guard Anthony Selden of the men’s basketball team, received GWU Athletes of The Week honors.

Below is a summary of their accomplishments.

Rohkohl

On the basketball court, Rohkohl put together two of the best performances of her young Gardner-Webb career so far. On Nov. 21 in Charlotte, N.C., the Hannover, Germany, native scored nine points, grabbed eight rebounds including three offensive boards, hit a pair of field goals and scored the first seven points of the second half in a row for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Rohkohl followed up against Johnson C. Smith on Nov. 23 by grabbing six offensive rebounds and nine total boards, with her offensive rebounding mark being by far the best by a GWU player this season.

In the pool, Bender helped pace Gardner-Webb to a fifth-place team finish in the four-day Queens Fall Frenzy on Nov. 24. The Alpharetta, Ga. native had a record setting weekend for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, setting multiple school records between the 100 yard and 200 yard breaststroke finals. These included times of 53.11 and second place in the men’s 100 yard and 1:57.62 and second place in the men’s 200 yard.

Motekaityte

In women’s basketball, Motekaityte posted two of the best games of her five-year career back-to-back. On Nov. 27 at App State, the Klaipeda, Lithuania, native scored eight points, grabbed 10 rebounds including four on the offensive end and recorded a block in 26 minutes. That would be the first ever double-digit rebound game for Motekaityte until Dec. 1, when the graduate forward scored 12 points, reset her career high with 11 rebounds and dished out two assists in 38 minutes for the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

Selden

Seldon

In men’s basketball, Selden went off for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, scoring 15 points against Southeast Louisiana before a career-high 29 points on 8-of-15 shooting in a win over Bethune-Cookman in Cancun on Nov. 27. Selden finished off a busy week on Nov. 29 with 19 points on 6-of-11 from the floor at Belmont, averaging 21 points on 59% as part of the three-game Cancun Challenge and winning MVP of the Mayan Division bracket.
