The University Counsel provides comprehensive in-house legal services to Gardner-Webb University. He is a member of the President’s Leadership Cabinet and provides advice and counsel to administrators from across the University regarding compliance with the many Federal and State laws and regulations that impact Higher Education.

Under the direction of the President, the University Counsel proactively addresses potential legal issues before they escalate into formal legal action. He provides advice on the potential legal ramifications and risks of pursuing various courses of action. He provides education and training to administrators and staff designed to prevent or resolve legal disputes. He manages outside attorneys and legal proceedings on behalf of the University.

Any outside attorney contacting a faculty or staff member about a University matter should be referred to the University Counsel.  All subpoenas, court orders and other legal papers involving the University should immediately be brought to the attention of the University Counsel for handling.

Because he represents only the University, the University Counsel cannot represent or provide legal advice to faculty or staff concerning personal matters.  Faculty and staff in need of an attorney for a personal matter may contact the North Carolina Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service at (800) 662-7660.
