Gardner-Webb is hiring an intern Mascot Handler in support of the GWU Live Mascot – Bo the Bulldog.

Internship Job Description

Job Purpose

The Little Dawg (mascot handler) is an unpaid intern on the Web & Digital Communications team who supports the strategic initiatives of Gardner-Webb University through participating in the care, social media content creation, marketing, transportation, and training of our official live mascot.

Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at Gardner-Webb and able to commit a minimum of one academic year to the program. Previous experience with live animals and working with people of all ages at large and small-scale events and social media and marketing interest is preferred, and students from all majors may apply.

A Runnin’ Bulldog Handler’s mission is to actively promote Gardner-Webb through working with the live mascot and university constituents, while upholding the values, ethics and traditions of GWU. As a handler, this individual will work closely with the Social Media Manager to promote GWU and the live mascot program through managing and creating content for his Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter social media channels. The handler will also be responsible for ensuring all live mascot schedules and needs are met.

Skill Requirements

  • Must be highly motivated, creative, self-starter with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be a positive leader and ambassador of Gardner-Webb University
  • Must have a background and/or interest in dog behavior
  • Must have a background and/or interest in social media and marketing
  • Must be able to physically handle a large dog (including sprinting 100 yards)
  • Must be willing to learn and follow directions regarding the care/training of the live mascot
  • Must be organized and timely in responding to emails and schedule requests

Expectations

  • Accompany the mascot to Runnin’ Bulldog athletic, alumni and advancement events, as well as other events both on and off campus
  • Observe crowd and the environment for any safety issues and respond appropriately as needed
  • Responsible for assisting with and adhering to the live mascot’s schedule at events
  • Observe the live mascot’s body language for signs of stress and responds appropriately (i.e. enforce breaks)
  • Must be knowledgeable of social media platforms and digital media and content creation, in particular, Instagram and interested or knowledgeable on the TikTok platform
  • Interact with fans in a friendly and knowledgeable manner
  • Must have a vehicle, valid driver’s license and clean driving record

Commitment

All candidates will be expected to work a 10 hour weekly average inclusive of all time spent on assigned duties including mandatory training sessions.

  • Attendance at an average of 2 events per week throughout the academic year (January– May 2023).
  • A minimum of 5 training hours will be provided, training time is in addition to scheduled events
  • Ability to balance a schedule that includes working evenings and some weekends, and balance class schedules
