Dr. William M. Downs Accepts Presidency of Campbell University

Downs will serve as Gardner-Webb President until June 30, 2025

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Dr. William M. Downs has been elected as the sixth president of Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C. He will take office on July 1, 2025.

During his presidency at Gardner-Webb University, Downs advanced academics, athletics, and student life. He spearheaded major capital projects including the construction of a state-of-the-art cafeteria, an amphitheater, and an indoor baseball facility, and the renovation of key academic and athletic spaces. Under his leadership, Gardner-Webb revitalized its sports brand and programs, bringing championship wins in basketball, football, tennis, and soccer. Academically, Downs modernized the general education core curriculum, ultimately increasing accessibility and enrollment, while preserving the university’s faith-based identity. Downs also led a visionary master planning and capital campaign project  articulating a bold path forward while increased giving and engagement.  Other important projects include the opening of a student health clinic, revival of the Marching Band, construction of the soccer fieldhouse, major library renovations, and the addition of Webbstock as an annual campus/community music festival tradition.

His leadership also guided Gardner-Webb through the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic and the recovery of a devastating hurricane.

“It has been an absolute honor to serve the Gardner-Webb community since 2019,” shared Downs.  “Kim and I cherish the relationships we’ve built, we celebrate the many successes of our students, and we marvel at all our amazing university team has accomplished by advancing the GWU mission.  It has meant the world to us to be Runnin’ Bulldogs, and we will be Runnin’ Bulldogs for life.”

“Dr. Downs’ bold leadership and dynamic energy will leave a lasting mark on Gardner-Webb. It has been a privilege to work alongside him and witness his transformative impact firsthand,” said Rev. Dr. Lamont Littlejohn, chair of the Gardner-Webb Board of Trustees. “While we will miss his vision and guidance, we are excited for the opportunities that await him at Campbell and wish him every success as he begins this next chapter.”
