Gain classroom and real-world experience to prepare you for a career in the news media and other communications fields by developing a full range of information-gathering, writing, editing and critical thinking skills.
Journalism students study and apply effective communication skills through instruction from professors with experience in the industry, participation in the University’s online student news source GWU Today, and reality-based education during a professional media internship. Courses develop an understanding of the rights and responsibilities of the press, a grasp of information gathering and reporting, and a mastery of writing and editing processes for print and digital media.
In addition to general education and prerequisite course requirements, Journalism majors must complete 39 hours of coursework, which includes 15 hours of department core classes and 24 hours focused on a specific concentration in Broadcast Journalism, News Editorial or Photojournalism. To provide you with reality-based experience, an off-campus professional internship associated with your concentration is also required.
