news-category: Christian Life and Service Gardner-Webb School of Divinity’s Annual Advent Devotional Begins on Dec. 2 By Office of University Communications On November 26, 2023 Contributors Include Students, Alumni, Board of Trustees Chair, Administration, Faculty and Staff BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Gardner-Webb University’s School of Divinity presents its annual Advent devotional series Dec. 2-25. Edited by faculty and staff from the divinity school, these devotions are contributed by GWU administration, students, alumni, Board of Trustees chair and other faculty and staff from across the campus. Associate Dean and Professor of New Testament Interpretation Dr. Jim McConnell guides the process of collecting, editing and compiling the daily devotions. He is assisted by Lisa Hollifield, divinity school administrative assistant, and Dr. Cal Robertson, professor of biblical studies. In the introduction, McConnell describes Advent as a celebration of “living in the in-between time” while waiting on the second coming of Jesus. Quoting from Romans 13:11-13, McConnell affirms, “And so, we wait, but, as Paul says, we do so actively, as those who are awake and not asleep. According to Paul, being awake means that we ‘lay aside the works of darkness’ and ‘live honorably.’ Paul calls on his readers to ‘put on the Lord Jesus Christ,’ in effect being enabled by the Spirit to be the presence of Christ wherever we are.” Read the Advent devotionals.
