Policy for SCPE Injury or Exposure Incident Reporting in the Clinical Year

Enrollment in PA and medical educational programs often yields unintentional exposure to unavoidable diseases like viruses. The student’s responsibility is to pursue healthcare and treatment advice, including the timeframe for safe return to the SCPE site from their medical provider, should the need arise.

In the event of injury or potential exposure, the student must contact the DCE at the earliest opportunity but no later than within 24 hours.

• If the student sustains an injury at a SCPE site, the student must report the incident immediately to the preceptor, complete any site requirements, and complete the Student Incident Report (located on Blackboard).
• If the student sustains a potentially harmful exposure at a SCPE site, the student must report the incident immediately to the preceptor, complete any site requirements, and complete the Student Incident Report (located on Blackboard).

The student is responsible for initiating care and obtaining recommended follow-up after the injury or exposure. Worker’s compensation insurance does not cover injuries occurring at SCPE sites or the GWU campus.

NOTE: All expenses incurred related to exposure are the sole responsibility of the PA student. Clinical sites and Gardner-Webb University and GWU Department of PA Studies are not liable for the cost of exposure testing.
