Gardner-Webb’s College of Health Sciences aims to attract students who are focused on providing quality medical service to those in need.

Each health science program is designed to be practice oriented while developing in students an aptitude for knowledgeable and nurturing patient care.

Launch College of Health Sciences

The mission of the College of Health Sciences is to prepare graduates for employment in various healthcare fields by providing a rigorous, evidence-based education in a Christ-centered, interprofessional, and collaborative environment. Graduates of the College of Health Sciences will be prepared to provide service-oriented leadership within diverse healthcare settings.

History

Pro Deo et Humanitate. Within these four Latin words lies the mission and purpose of Gardner-Webb University and the backbone of Christ-centered faith. Pro Deo et Humanitate: For God and Humanity. This call to service—this divinely-inspired quest to impact a world that desperately needs a healing touch both spiritually and physically—was a key motivator behind the establishment of the College of Health Sciences at Gardner-Webb.

As the concern over healthcare options for citizens continued to rise, university officials discussed the need for a College of Health Sciences in order to provide programs that would meet the wellness needs of an underserved rural population and increase the number of primary care physicians and physician extenders entering and providing services in the marketplace. To meet the demand for primary care health professionals in the region, the University added the Exercise Science major and the Department of Physician Assistant Studies in 2012. GWU also established the Family Nurse Practitioner program in the Hunt School of Nursing in 2013.

Forming the academic infrastructure to launch those programs was an important first step. But to continue the mission, leaders believed a standalone College of Health Sciences facility would provide additional opportunities to build on an already-exceptional series of health-focused degree programs at GWU.

In 2014, Gardner-Webb University Board of Trustees announced the purchase of a 53,500 square-foot building to house the College of Health Sciences. Following extensive, state-of-the-art renovations, the facility—formerly Crawley Memorial Hospital—now provides the contemporary classroom, lab, and office spaces needed to carry out the University’s high-quality programs in nursing, physician assistant studies, and preventive and rehabilitative health sciences.

The full-spectrum of healthcare degrees available through the GWU College of Health Sciences allows students to progress seamlessly to achieve their career and educational goals. GWU maintains productive partnerships with community healthcare facilities, providing students with valuable opportunities for service learning. Patient-centered care, evidence-based practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration are educational priorities at Gardner-Webb.
