Selfless Bulldog

Greenville, SC

Michael Causey, ’23, chose to attend Gardner-Webb University because “it felt like it could quickly become a home away from home.” He is a double major in Sport Management and Communication Studies with a double minor in Discipleship Studies and Spanish. Later Michael plans to earn his master’s degree in Sport Management and wants to become a Sports Information Director at a mid-major division I college.

As a Selfless Bulldog, Michael is heavily involved in the student life at Gardner-Webb. He is gaining experience while working in the athletic media relations department, showing potential GWU students around campus as an SRA (Student Recruitment Ambassador) in the admissions office, practicing service learning in the Honors Program, and serving as a YoungLife leader at Shelby Middle School for campus ministries.

Michael describes himself as caring, personable, and hardworking. He said, “I am always looking to help people that I come across and am always looking for ways to relate to people from our first interaction.” This is one reason why he appreciates the 13:1 student-faculty ratio. When deciding on a college, he was interested in forming relationships with GWU faculty due to the small class sizes.

You are probably wondering when Michael has time to study or see his friends, but while he’s been at Gardner-Webb, he’s become an expert in time maximization. “I am very involved with a lot of things on and off campus while also wanting to have time to hang out with my friends,” Michael shared. “This leads me to needing to be very meaningful with my time.” While juggling schoolwork, his campus job, and other commitments, he still finds time to play Mario Kart and watch TV with his roommates.

One of Michael’s favorite GWU off-campus events is new-release movie night at The Big E in Gaffney, SC. Student Activities arranges for movies and bowling free for Gardner-Webb students at the entertainment center, which also has an arcade, rope course, laser tag, and mini golf. During both semesters of finals week, you’ll probably see Michael in the Caf with hundreds of other students playing Pancake Bingo. This is a time for students to get their minds off exams and have fun with friends while eating too many pancakes and competing in bingo games for high-dollar prizes. Just like Michael, you’ll find your niche at Gardner-Webb. There’s something for everyone in our loving, tight-night community of Bulldog Nation.
