Serve with Purpose: Ways to Get Involved

During the Week of Giving, Service & Prayer (November 10–14), we invite every member of the Gardner-Webb family to commit 120 Minutes of Impact by serving others. Whether you choose to volunteer individually or with your department, on campus or in the community, each act of service reflects our mission to be Grounded in Faith and Growing in Purpose.

Explore the opportunities below—or propose your own—and join us in making a meaningful difference for our neighbors in Cleveland County.

  • Be a Lunch Buddy.
  • Do program with/for participants. Depending on Volunteer’s comfort level, programs could be 1 on 1, small group, large group, just men, just women, older adults, younger adults, or any/all the above. Almost anything can be a program! You can share your job, your trips to different places, your hobbies, or your talents. I will list a few examples to give you some ideas.
    • Any musical program – playing an instrument, singing, dancing, sharing collections/experiences. If you aren’t musical, bring someone that is. This crowd doesn’t care if you are a superstar or if you can’t carry a tune in the bucket. They just love music.
    • Lead a Bible study or have your church come do a program. Many of our participants do not get to “go” to church anymore.
    • Cooking – share your favorite recipe and let participants help. Almost everyone likes to “cook”, even if it’s just being part of the conversation. Host a tea party. Reminisce with them about learning to cook, or favorite things Grandma/Mama used to cook. Cut recipes out of magazines. Create an LEC Recipe Book.
    • Any type of art program – if you are an artist, talk about it while you demonstrate the project. Help the participants participate in an art project. Help participants create props/artwork for special events or holidays such as prom or Christmas Program.
    • Any type of craft project – there are unlimited possibilities.
    • Play cards, checkers, putt-putt, cornhole, trivia, games, etc. (of course you may have to use LEC rules).
    • Polish, clean and file fingernails – most love the “spa” experience.
  • Call BINGO with Younger and Older Adults (can be the same day but at separate times of the day).
  • Do you have a green thumb? Participants would love to help you do something in the greenhouse, garden, or flowerbed. If you have a lot of blooming flowers, they would love to help you put them in vases or make table arrangements.

Group or Individual Volunteer Opportunities to help the centers/staff:

  • Clean weeds out of garden spaces, till, and plant garden. (Both Centers)
  • Clean out flower beds and plant new seasonal flowers. (Both Centers)
  • Clean out and organize greenhouse. (KM)
  • Pressure wash. (Shelby)

Any day of the week during lunch (11:00 am -1:00pm)

Come and help do Duty Free lunch for our teachers. Other staff would be there to help but it would help give teachers a chance to have a small break. Basically, volunteer to cover lunch so the teachers could have a quiet lunch in the classroom.
