Prepare For Your Headshot Session

What you choose to wear in your headshot session will help establish your professional identity within your network. Since most people, including prospective students, will see your professional headshot before they meet you face-to-face, your wardrobe in professional photo headshots is an important part of making a great first impression.

General Tips

Consider these general tips as you prepare for your professional portrait session:

  • Get a good night’s sleep the night before.
  • Take a few moments to clear your mind on the day of your shoot before you start your session.
  • Bring multiple outfits just in case something happens to the one you plan to wear to your session (No one needs a second reason to cry over spilled coffee)

Wardrobe Tips

Consider these wardrobe tips as you prepare for your professional portrait session:

  • Consider clothing that makes you feel good about yourself.
  • Avoid wearing logos displaying other Universities as well as the “old GWU dog” logo
  • Avoid wearing all gray or busy patterns.
  • Avoid wearing very shiny jewelry.
    • Simple “finishing touch” accessories are a great choice!
  • I will be shooting from the waist up—Consider how your outfit will be cropped
  • For glasses: it’s optional to wear them for the shoot.
  • For long hair: please bring a brush to the shoot.
  • There are restrooms in the building and there is a mirror in the studio for last minute checks.
