Join a Band!

Whether marching to bring energy and spirit to the crowds at Runnin’ Bulldog football games, light shows at GWU basketball games, or performing works from world renowned composers, joining band at GWU has never been more exciting and rewarding. Take a look at the individual ensembles to find out more about all the opportunities you’ll have when you get involved! 

GWU Bands welcomes students majoring in music as well as non-majors with the desire to continue their musical growth through performance in band.  GWU Bands consist of the The Sound of the Springs Marching Bulldogs, Symphonic Band and GWU Pep Band. We also have 7 small ensembles. Percussion Ensemble, Brass Choir, Handbell Choir, Jazz Ensemble, Old Time Ensemble, Reach Worship and Musical Theatre and Opera.

Marching band - MUSC 188

The Marching Bulldogs are the most visible ensemble on campus. The Marching Bulldogs is a corps-style marching band that performs at all Gardner-Webb home football games, select away games, high school competition exhibitions and more.

Gardner-Webb’s marching band program began in the 1940s, and includes woodwinds, brass, battery percussion, front ensemble, colorguard, twirlers and dance section. The Marching Bulldogs meet during the fall semester every Wednesday and Friday from 4pm-6pm. Participants can earn a $1,000 scholarship and stack a $250 Find a Buddy fund.

Dance section auditions are held the beginning of April. Percussion, brass, woodwind, colorguard and twirler will be determined during mini camps during the summer. Video auditions considered.

Membership is open to all GWU students and community members. Attendance at band camp, the week before school opens, is required. The ensemble is offered for 1 academic credit or 0-credit if needed.

Symphonic Band - MUSC 385

The Symphonic Band is dedicated to performing the best in concert wind band literature. Symphonic Band is open to members of the local community and all GWU students regardless of major. The ensemble rehearses weekly, performs semesterly, and occasionally performs at University commencement exercises. Instruments are available when necessary.
Non-Music Major members of Symphonic Band receive a $1,000 scholarship per year.

GWU Pep Band - MUSC 187

Your GWU Pep Band strives to create excitement, entertainment and memories for all. This energetic group plays at all home Men’s and Women’s basketball games, Big South Conference, NCAA basketball tournament, as well as other various functions around campus. The band has become an integral part to the university, being one of the most requested ensembles. The band brings energy, spirit and engaging music to all basketball games, events and more!
The ensemble is comprised of woodwinds, brass, rhythm section and dance section. There are no auditions, with exception of the dance section and rhythm section. The application process begins mid-October.
Membership is open to all GWU students and community members. Pep band rehearses every Friday from 4pm-6pm and plays at games on Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons. The ensemble is offered for 1 academic credit or 0-credit if needed. Participants can earn a $250 scholarship.

Small Ensembles

Small University Ensembles include Percussion Ensemble, Brass Choir, Handbell Choir, Jazz Ensemble, Old Time Ensemble, Reach Worship and Musical Theatre and Opera.
